I was so excited when the folks from My Stars asked if I wanted to contribute a quilt to their new Optical Illusions book. This book is full of amazing designs that really make you look twice. They are all so fun!!!
I love designing quilts and when I started thinking of optical illusions I was reminded of the illusion of windmills moving forward as well as around that I saw on one of our family trips. Old Dutch is my version of that illusion and I just love the way it turned out. The windmills really do seem to move out of the quilt ;)
When it came time to quilt this, I decided to do a large spiral moving out from the center. I really think it added to the overall movement I was trying to create in the illusion. I always think it is fun to quilt this design, and made a giant swirl video tutorial of how I quilt this design, just in case you want to try it out ;)
I am so excited to finally get to share Old Dutch with you and hope you like it as much as I do ;)
I have two wonderful friends guest blogging about Old Dutch and Optical Illusions today as well. So please be sure to pop on over and check out Daniar from Fat Quarter Shop and Lynne from Lily Quilts posts as well (and they have giveaways too!!)
And of course, there is a giveaway here too!!! I used an Oakshott Cotton Italy Bundle to create Old Dutch and Oakshott Cottons has graciously provided a brand new Autumn Oakshott Bundle for one lucky reader!!!
To be entered to win this gorgeous bundle, simply leave a comment at the end of this post telling me what your favorite thing about Autumn is.
One entry per person please. International Entries are welcome. Giveaway will end at 8 am Monday morning (November 10th) and I will announce a winner shortly after.
And be sure to follow along with the rest of the blog hop!!! There are lots of amazing quilts that will be shared over the coming days and inspiration galore ;) And of course, there will be lots of prizes along the way :)

ReplyDeleteI love your quilt. The colors are so soothing. I also love making that first apple pie of the season. I've kept to that tradition since I had my first student apartment in college nearly forty years ago.
ReplyDeleteKicking through the fallen leaves!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Autumn is the colors we are blessed to see here in New England! It also tempts me to stay home and bake and snuggle under one of my quilts!
ReplyDeleteI love fresh apple cider made from local apples, and supporting my local farmers.
ReplyDeleteWow I love the illusions you can create with color. My favorite thing about Autumn is just that. Color. In Montana we don't get as much fall foliage as we have a lot of evergreens. But a really love what we do get. The yellow orange red green combo is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the leaves. I'm fascinated by the glorious colors, and I love how they rustle when you walk through them. It makes me feel like a kid, again!
ReplyDeleteI live where it is HOT in the summer, and Autumn brings with it the gorgeous cool nights and breezy, warm days... so much better than HOT! lol. ReplyDeleteIt is a toss up between the color or the crisper weather. Love this giveaway. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI love everything about Autumn, the cooler temperatures, the lovely leaf colors and the feeling of gathering in and "hunkering down" for the coming winter.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors, the crisp air and family gatherings!
ReplyDeleteWatching the pretty leaves from behind my windows, where I'm sitting warm & well with a cup of hot chocolate. Or coffee. Whipped cream always makes it even better! I actually dislike the short days and hour savings (or, back to regular time, it's always off for the place where we live), but the colors. Nothing beats autumn colors. Even my closet screams autumn to me all year round... :) We're lucky with this year's weather though, it's still over 10 degrees C, which is good! <3
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
My favourite parts of Autumn are the beautiful colours and the tasty fall foods
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of autumn is the changing of the leaves.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of Autumn is the falling leaves and that crispness in the air.
ReplyDeleteMy favorit thing about Autume is the turning of the leaves, do not like the rain so much, but the cooler temperatures are also great. Thank you for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI think it relates clear back to the '1st day of school' but autumn always seems like fresh starts to me.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that is a odd book cover. It looks like steps up to a gallows with the feet showing of someone who was hung. I suppose it is supposed to be someone hanging the OP quilt...but their feet are just hanging there in space.
I LOVE the quilting on your quilt. Graphic quiltings adds so much to any pattern, stippling/meandering muddies the whole finished project.
I just love Old Dutch. You are right about the fact that the windmills seem to be moving. Almost like imaging them swaying with the wind. I love watching the trees turning different colors. Just so amazing and so beautiful to see and enjoy. Thank you for the chance to become a winner. Just love the idea of maybe receiving a squishy package in the mail. Just really makes your day.

ReplyDeleteGoing to our local cider mill for fresh cider and apple fritters!
ReplyDeleteAutumn is my very favorite time of the year here in Kansas. The air is so crisp it seems to awaken the senses. The sky is bluer and the leaves much more colorful. With this awakening, it reminds us to get outside and enjoy this change.
ReplyDeleteI love that fall is sweater weather! Love the color change in the leaves but hate having to rake them.....
ReplyDeleteI love the fall colors even here in Northern California where there are some trees which put on a good show. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing I don't love about Autumn. The colors, the constant changing back and forth, the harvest, snuggling, doing inside stuff, playing and doing outside stuff in the cooler, but not quite cold weather. I just love it!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about autumn is finally putting a quilt on the bed and waking up toasty warm on a chilly morning. Oh, and my birthday in October is nice too :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great giveaway!
I love the saturated colors of Autumn = Deep reds, orangges and even the browns. Looking forward to perusing this new book.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Autumn is definitely the leaves! Or maybe the cool days! Or maybe roasting marshmallows in the fire pit with my daughter! Or maybe the subtle difference in the rays of the sun! Oh! Too many good things!!
ReplyDeleteI like the crisp air and changing colors of the leaves-just don't like having to rake them all up!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is just lovely, great design.
Favorite part of Autumn? Pumpkin Spice Chai at Starbucks!
ReplyDeleteCooler weather, for sure!
ReplyDeleteFall running and cool weather foods.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Fall is all of the colorful leaves on the trees as well as how they weave themselves together into a colorful carpet on the ground. Of course my least favorite thing about fall is having to rake up all those leaves that have fallen to the ground.
ReplyDeleteI adore the crunching of the fallen leaves - it is the MOST satisfying thing!!
ReplyDeleteThe colors and the cooler temps are also very welcome, but the crunching - love it!

I love the leaves and snuggling under quilts
ReplyDeleteNatures colors in the Fall are the most inspiring thing. It gives me great inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI love the way the colors light up the countryside!
ReplyDeleteFall colors are what I love about fall. Too bad we don't have the tree's in Southwest Texas to change colors!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about fall has to be the beautiful colors of the leaves. I used to collect leaves and press them between all the catalogs that we got and then use them on the tables at Thanksgiving. But, a year ago we moved to Alabama, and we just don't get the pretty colors down here. I miss that part, but I don't miss the snow:) Nancy: rangerer@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Autumn is the cooler weather! It is November 6, and here in Houston, it's going to be a high of 70 today. I can finally wear a jacket outdoors!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Autumn is the colors of the leaves when they change. Thank you for the chance to win this great bundle of fabric. Take care and God bless, Cory
ReplyDeleteI love the changing of the leaves too. The colors are beautiful! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteSomeone above mentioned all the comfort foods that come in autumn - soups and stews and things like that - and yeah, I definitely can get behind that! Also, the colours of the leaves is wonderful. And breaking out the wool coat that's too warm the rest of the year and too cold through the winter.
ReplyDelete(clumsy.chord(at)gmail.com)
Your quilt is lovely. Congrats on being a contributor. In the fall, I love walking through crunchy fallen leaves and the light of the sun as it changes over from summer to fall.
ReplyDeleteI love all the beautiful colours of fall, and the crisp fresh smell in the air! Even though it predicts the start of the snow!! But that is beautiful in its own way :)
ReplyDeleteFall to me is the changing Color of the leaves, and the sound of walking in them.
ReplyDeleteFinally getting to wear warm clothes all the time
ReplyDeleteYour quilt pattern is lovely! I see your favorite flying geese and HSTs! My favorite thing about autumn is the varying shades of red, orange, and yellow leaves and sitting at my sewing machine, cozily enjoying a rainy day!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about fall is to see all the changes in nature. The color changes, the migration of the birds and the change in the air where it is crisp, fresh and clean.
ReplyDeleteLove autumn because of all of the colors that the leaves change into....the reds, yellows, and oranges. Most beautiful time of the year.
ReplyDeleteThe cool crisp air and color of the leaves.
ReplyDeleteI love autumn days when it's sunny and the air is cool and crisp, and the changing colors of the leaves are just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors - they are my go-to palette for quilts. I also love that I can sit at night and watch tv bundled up in a quilt to stave off the cooler weather. Nice and toasty.
ReplyDeleteThe color change of the leaves is always a favorite. But my ultimate favorite thing I look for every year is that exact moment when the leaves fall and get caught in a breeze and do a twirly dance before settling on the ground. It is even better if that happens while sipping fresh pressed cold apple cider and munching on hot cinnamon sugar doughnuts at the local cider mill (which has been around since 1863!). Oh Autumn how I love thee!
ReplyDeleteI love the change in weather - Texas summers are brutal and Autumn promises relief. Thanks for the giveaway of lovely fabrics!!
ReplyDeleteCool camping. Warm fires. Back to my sewing room!!
ReplyDeleteNature throws a party during autumn. The colors, the falling confetti, the soft carpet of leaves, and the apple cider -- it all feels like a celebration. It helps that my husband's birthday is in October.
ReplyDeleteAfter the heat of the long summer, I look forward to the cooler temps and the color changes on the trees.
ReplyDeleteThe comfort foods. (I havent liked fall in the past as being first pregnant and everything was dying, ive finally gotten over it and can say i enjoy the foods and colors).
ReplyDeleteI love the change of the light in the early evenings of autumn. The changing leaf colors are just breathtaking in that light.
ReplyDeletescrunching leaves in the gutter - sqruash sqruash
ReplyDeleteI love fall apples! :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about autumn? It's gotta be the pumpkin flavored frozen custard stuff at Culver's. Oh, wait, no, caramel apples! No, no, mallowcream pumpkins! Argh, how do I decide!
ReplyDeleteI can't say I like autumn at all. Spring is my favorite season--it means rebirth to me. By contrast, autumn means death. It means winter is coming, it means my flowers are gone, it means no more lovely nectarines, etc. sigh. Apples are good, but get boring.
ReplyDeleteThe weather! That makes me want to sew all the things!!!
ReplyDeleteThe leaves are the best, but the cool, dry air is a closer second.
ReplyDeleteAutumn. I love the crisp clean air, brilliant blue skies and variegated leaves.

Love your quilt and the quilting - just perfect!! Thank you for the opportunity to win the Oakshott cotton!!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite things about fall are the beautiful colors and the cooler temps.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite thing about autumn is sweaters. I love being able to pull my handknits out of storage and wear them again. And fall is extra nice because unlike winter and spring, I don't need to wear a jacket over them to protect myself from the damp (if you can call winter's steady downpours damp)--perfect sweater weather. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is lovely and congrats on the book! Originally from California, you don't see seasons really change so dramatically as you do in Kansas. I really appreciate and love seeing the leaves turn and the mix of colors that come with them. Unfortunately they seem to come and go so quickly, most certainly this year!
