I absolutely loved Vanessa's first quilt Charm School, a Charm Pack friendly book. And if you can't tell from the title of her new book Jelly Filled, this book is all about Jelly Rolls!!!
I got to make the Smart Cookie quilt from Jelly Filled and I just love this awesome design, doesn't it just shine!!! You all know I love a good star quilt, and Stars combined with a Log Cabin design, and then to make it all interlock, brilliant!!! This quilt just has so much movement, and I just love the twist Vanessa put on traditional blocks. And it was so fun and fast to piece :)
And I know that this is a "Jelly Filled" quilt, but I actually used a Half Yard bundle instead of Jelly Rolls :) But can you blame me?? And soon as I saw the design of this quilt, I just knew it would be perfect for a bundle of New Ombre Colors that I had. I just loved the ideas of the Log Cabin parts of the blocks being an Ombre gradient of lights and darks. It took me a little while to figure out how to get it all cut, but it was totally worth it. Wouldn't you agree!!!
And I took some pictures along the way of cutting, Just in case you want to make an Ombre Smart Cookie as well :) You can just use the following directions along with your Jelly Filled Book instructions. And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me :)
So first off, for the quilt top you will need:
12 Half Yard Cuts of any Ombre Fabric (I used the New Colors bundle)
- From the pattern, these will be used as the 12 Print Fat Quarters as well as the Cream Fabric.
Cut according to the instructions below using the pattern for sizes :)
2 Yards of White Grunge or White Solid
- From the pattern, this yardage will be used as the Black Fabric
Cut according to the instructions in the pattern ;)
Do the following 4 steps for each of the 12 Half Yard cuts. The top or darker part will become your "print" pieces and the bottom or lighter part will become your "cream" pieces
Trim the 2 sides and top and bottom of the Half Yardage piece so you have (2) 17 1/2" x 20" squares. Keep the two squares stacked on top of each other with wrong sides together.
Cut a 2 1/2" x 17 1/2" strip from the top and bottom of the trimmed squares.
Then cut the remaining square vertically into (2) 12 1/2" x 15" rectangles and (2) 5" x 15" rectangles. Set the 5" x 15" rectangles aside for a moment.
From the (2) 12 1/2" x 15" rectangles cut horizontally to make (12) 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" in 6 rows.
The top three rows along with the Top 17 1/2" strip cut in the step above become the Print Rectangles from the pattern and you will use the "or 12 Fat Quarters" instructions from the Pattern to cut the Print Rectangles Designated below.
The bottom three rows along with the Bottom 17 1/2" strip cut in the step above become the Cream Rectangles from the pattern. Follow the size directions below and take note of which pieces go in Block 1 (making 2 per Half Yard Piece) and which go in Block 2 (making 1 per Half Yard Piece).
And finally, grab the (2) 5" x 15" rectangles that were set aside.
From the first rectangle cut (2) 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles to use for the "cream" fabrics in Block 1
From the second rectangle cut (3) 5" x 5" squares to be used in the Step 2 directions of both Blocks
And now you are all set to piece your quilt!!! And then when it is all pieced together, you can quilt and bind it and have an awesome Ombre Smart Cookie quilt as well ;) I decided to quilt mine with an all over bubble swirl ;) And I used a Rainbow variegated thread and I just love how it adds to all of that ombre goodness of the quilt!!!
And of course, it creates some gorgeous texture as well!!! I used a black grunge binding and it finishes off this ombre rainbow just perfectly :) Isn't it just so fun!!! The quilt finishes at 84" square so it will make for an awesome quilt to take on a picnic or snuggle up in.
And that is my Smart Cookie quilt from Vanessa Goertzen's new Jelly Filled book, made using the gorgeous new Ombre Fabrics by Vanessa Christensen. And I absolutely love, love, love the way it turned out!!! Thank you so much to Vanessa for having me along this fun parade :) And be sure to check out Vanessa's blog for lots more quilts from Jelly Filled!!!

ReplyDeleteI love jelly rolls!
ReplyDeleteI like layer cakes. And thank you, Melissa, for showing us how you quilted the quilt! I always appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteI love charm packs and jelly rolls. I also use a lot of fat quarters.
ReplyDeleteHi,Use them all,but Charm Packs are my favorite! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteFat Quarters-for the win!!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't used many precuts. I would love to win this and use the jelly roll that's been sitting in my room fo a long time.
ReplyDeleteI love fat quarters and layer cakes. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I love layer cakes.
ReplyDeleteI like 10" squares since I can go in many directions with this size.
ReplyDeleteI love jelly rolls. The book would be just perfect!!
ReplyDeleteI like layer cakes for their versatility but jelly rolls are great too.
ReplyDeleteI like jelly rolls but struggle with what to make with them.
ReplyDeleteI love charm packs - great for patchwork quilts.
ReplyDeleteI like the convenience of the jelly rolls, but unless I have a specific use for one, I just buy fat quarters.
ReplyDeleteI like all precut, but probably have the most jelly rolls. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI love all precuts but especially like the fat quarter bundle because I can usually make at least 2 projects if not more from a bundle.
ReplyDeleteI prefer to use jelly rolls and then layer cakes. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI love using fat quarters and charm squares! The fat quarters have quickly become my new favorite because they are so versatile!
ReplyDeletejelly rolls - love them!
ReplyDeleteI love using layer cakes and jelly rolls. Looks like a great book.
ReplyDeleteJelly rolls, of course! But I also use a lot of charm packs and mini charm packs!
ReplyDeletejulie.mirdoch@shaw.ca
Picking a favorite precut is like picking a favorite ice cream flavor! :) I have been using a lot of layer cakes lately, but just picked up the Charm School book, so I forsee using a lot of them in the near future. Jelly rolls are fun, too, so I guess I love them all!
ReplyDeleteSandy A
What a coooool quilt! Love it!! Would love to win this book...thanks for the chance!!! I love using Charms & fat quarters...but currently have been using many jelly rolls as well... (Guess I am a proven fabric addict huh? giggle...)
ReplyDeleteI seem to buy more layer cakes (I guess thinking I can get 4 charm packs out of it, if I need to) but I also LOVE jelly rolls.
ReplyDeleteI love them all, especially jelly rolls and layer cakes!
ReplyDeleteI love all precuts for different reasons, I alway use jelly roll strips for binding so I don't have to cut my own. Thank you for a great giveaway. x
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I have a favorite precut. If I'm angry sewing, then a layer cake because it comes together quickly. Strip piecing is mellow. Charm packs make sweet small things. I guess they all have a place in my sewing.
I use FQs mostly but I do like the jelly rolls as well ... BUT (lol) I have a box full of charm squares and mini squares just because they are fun ... don't use them but ... it's fabric after all.
ReplyDeleteMy top choice is fat quarters, but I like layer cakes too. I love how your quilt turned out.
ReplyDeleteI love thw versatility of fat quarters.
ReplyDeleteI seem to buy jelly rolls the most of any precuts.
ReplyDeleteI'm torn between layer cakes and jelly rolls!
ReplyDeleteLove fat quarters!!
ReplyDeleteCurrent favorite is Fat 8ths. There are a lot of charm, jelly roll, and even FQ patterns that can be adapted to use F8. More versatile than you would think.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed using all the precuts, with different purposes or parameters in mind. But probably the one I buy the most is charm packs because they are not so big of an investment, and can be used to make quick table runners.
ReplyDeleteIt seems I have more charm packs than anything else, since I love to make charm quilts and runners, Jelly rolls come in a close second
ReplyDeleteI alternate between jelly rolls and layer cakes. I love your quilt😍
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are charm packs and jelly rolls as well.
ReplyDeleteFat quarters or jelly rolls
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous quilt! My favorite pre-cut to sew with is fat quarters. I just feel like they give me more options. That said! That doesn't stop me from collecting all other sizes of pre-cuts too. ;o)

ReplyDeleteI love your twist on this one...ombré fabrics are amazing!
I really like two pre-cuts the best. Fat Quarters and Layer Cakes-they seem to be the most versatile when I am wanting to make a quilt quickly.
ReplyDeleteI don't buy precuts often because I'm poor, but I cut a lot of my scraps into 5" charm squares - so I guess they'd be my favorite since I use them the most! (But I have used a jelly roll once, and I have used a layer cake once, and I enjoyed both of those too.)
ReplyDeleteJelly rolls are my favorite precut.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt! The quilting is amazing! My favorite pre-cut right now are fat quarters, however, I have not tried a jelly roll! Thank you for sharing, Susan

It helped me understand the pattern so much better. I’ve never bought these fabrics, but now I will!! You did an Amazing job! Thank you for the tutorial!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite precut is a fat quarter.
ReplyDeleteI rarely use pre-cuts because I actually enjoy the process of cutting. I do however pick up a jelly roll now and then to keep on hand for those times I need to make something quick and easy for someone in need.
ReplyDeleteI don't have one, but entering the giveaway as a gift for my sister. Thanks for the giveaway!
