**Note - If you get a little squeamish at the sight of blood, (like me) don't keep reading this post as the next two pics are from before the bandage :) But know I am okay and healing :)
And of course, I was all alone at home when I managed to do this so I had to clean and bandage it myself. I am not great with the sight of blood, especially my own and I might have gotten a bit faint while cleaning it, so I decided to take a picture to try and distract myself. And that's when I realized just how much I had cut off. And because I cut it off, verses cutting into my finger, stitches wont help. I just have to wait for the skin to grow back.
After applying pressure for a few minutes I got the bleeding to stop and saw that I had cut several layers of skin off. I bandaged it up with lots of ointment and my Lori Holt Bandages, at least it looks cute!!!! My sweetheart later let me know that I would no longer have a fingerprint in that spot. (Sounds silly, but I didn't realize those don't grow back :) The finger is still sore, especially if it gets bumped, ouch!!! I changed the bandage this morning and it is still a lot of raw skin, but the very outer edge is starting to grow back, so maybe a weekish and I will be back to full steam. I have to say, it really is a pain to try and align fabric to stitch without your middle finger, tee hee hee :)
Oh, and in case you are wondering, no fabric was stained in this little mishap. I whipped my hand back super fast when I realized what I had done so no blood got on my fabric, whew!!
And one last funny note, someone was asking my husband how I did it and he explained that I cut it with a rotary cutter. When they asked him what a rotary cutter was he explained that it is like a pizza cutter with a razor blade attached. I thought it was a pretty good explanation :)

Hope your having a very Happy (accident free) Quilting Day!!!!
I managed to do that last year. Sliced the tip of my finger right off.
ReplyDeleteI cut through the same finger last year-right through the nail! I still don't have all the feeling back in the tip of it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the warning for the squeamish. That'd be me. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteOUCH!! I just did the same thing about 3 weeks ago. I treated it the same way the dr. told me to treat a skin cancer spot I had removed last fall and it healed beautifully! Clean every morning with a q-tip dipped in peroxide, then put a layer of Vaseline on the band aid and wrap it up. Repeat for 10 days. You would never know I took such a big chunk off except my fingertip is slanted on one side now instead of rounded. I wore a glove in the shower for a couple days because it hurt bad in the warm water and of course my husband had to wash the dishes for a few days but he's good at that. :) Good luck with yours!
ReplyDeleteDone this twice, first time requiring stitches and second time they said they could not sew the side back on. And just like you, I whipped my finger to mouth and not a drop got on the fabric. Funny how we react like that!!!! Glad yours isn’t too bad.
ReplyDeleteI purchased acrylic ruler guards for my most used rulers - I was afraid some of my friends that were trying to learn how to quilt would cut their fingers off but it has been my experience that well seasoned quilters are the ones who do it more - at least in our quilt guild. They are like angle iron with self adhesive strips, made of out of acrylic by O'lippa -- well worth the money, and they can be cut to size. I cut my fingertips many years ago trying to pull some grass away from a lawn mower -- so we all learn in our own way....... My fingers had stitches but things do not feel the same as they do with the unharmed fingers. Stay safe!
ReplyDeleteOWWWWWW
ReplyDeleteI use only the small cutters bc those big ones are too much for a klutz bucket like me
There you have it - clear cut evidence that hubs needs to retire and stay home full time with his favorite patient!! ❤️💕❤️
ReplyDeleteToo funny that never happened before but on the day you mentioned it. Glad you are ok and so is fabric. I’ve already used 2 of the bandaids. Keeping the box in my craft room!
ReplyDeleteHope it heals soon! My son scraped his finger on a sheet of metal at work last week, and wasn't able to have stitches, either. Just hearing about it made my stomach hurt .
ReplyDeleteSo sorry Melissa. I hope it heals very soon. I have come close, but so far, have only cut into my nails. I can only imagine what you are going through.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your little accident. I'm sure that was, and is, very painful. While I have never done that before, (fingers crossed I won't), I once ran the sewing machine needle through the nail of my forefinger into the bone. I was going full warp speed but the bone stopped the needle in it's tracks.
ReplyDeleteOUCH Melissa. I think the Karma came with the purchase of those bandaids. You had no need for them in the past so once they were safely in your hands, BAM!
ReplyDeleteOh but on the bright side? You can rob a bank now and be sure to use the finger with no fingerprint to touch things. LOL (Kidding) I hope it heals quickly.
Hope it heals quickly. That's when we learn how much we hit our fingers.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry. I had the same experience a couple of weeks ago. This was my first time to cut myself. I just rolled that blade right over my finger and finger nail. Fortunately, I didn't need stitches. We need to buy one of those gloves for rotary cutting!
ReplyDeleteOh No! do hope your finger heals soon....
ReplyDeleteBeen there, done that! ;)
ReplyDeleteanother reminder to wear my glove when cutting - which I do most of the time after my friend gave herself a nasty cut with her rotary cutter!
