Desert Rose in Rosy Cheeks!!

Today I am super excited to be sharing this beautiful new Desert Rose quilt finish with you featuring the oh so cute Rosy Cheeks Collection by Lori Woods for Poppie Cotton!!  And you know, when I remake a pattern quilt, I like to change out the background . . . so this time I went with a beautiful soft green!!  Isn't it just so pretty!!!

This Desert Rose Quilt is so much fun to make and it is Fat Quarter Friendly so you can just grab a bundle and add your background fabric. Aren't the prints in this Rosy Cheeks collection just so adorable!!  I love those little tea cups, and the florals are just so pretty :)   I used Sea Glass Mint Country Confetti for my background fabric and I love how it makes all of those charming prints just look so bright and happy!!  It really keeps the white and light prints from getting lost ;)

And while this might look a little difficult, Desert Rose can be broken down into basic piecing units.  You will learn Half Square Triangles, and lots of No Waste Flying Geese making this quilt.   And then you get some great practice on lining up pretty points!!   And with the big block size, once you get the units all made, the quilt comes together in a snap :)

This design has always been a favorite of mine!!  I just love the big floral blocks that have the echoed background throughout the petals.  It just creates a lot of great negative space that really shows off the design.   And I just love it in this fun background . . . it always blows me away how much it changes up the quilt to go from a white background to something different.  Just so cool!!!

Barbara did the quilting and piecing on this one as I am a little swamped with working on new patterns :)  And her quilting is just oh so cute!!  She quilted all of the negative space in fun loop de loops and flowers and left the prints unquilted.  This really makes the design pop in this quilt and adds so much amazing texture.  So great!!

And like all of my Happy Quilting patterns, the the nice thing is, the  Desert Rose Pattern  has multiple size options, so you can make whatever size you like. This is the picnic size, but you can make it from a baby size all the way to a queen size ;)   The bigger the quilt, the more flowers dance across it!!

And that is the new Desert Rose Quilt! I hope you have enjoyed this post and consider making your own Desert Rose Quilt!!! And if you do, I would love to see them! You can share your projects with me on social media with the hashtags  #happyquiltingwithmc and #desertrosequilt and tagging @happyquiltingmc or email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com. I can't wait to see your Desert Rose Quilts!!

Thank you so much for popping by and sharing this finish with me and thank you to my wonderful friends at Poppie Cotton for always letting me play with their gorgeous fabrics!!!

I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!

New Works In Progress - Wedding Quilts!!

So I realized I put this on social media but forgot to announce it here.   Our Jessica is getting Married!!!  We are so very excited :)   We just love Treyson and can't wait to see these two create a life together!!  They will be Married in the Cedar City Temple on September 20th, 2025 and we are just so very happy!!  We just got a new daughter in law in March, and now we get to add a son in law to the family as well!!!   Just amazing!!!   And in quilting terms, it means 3 new Wedding Quilts!!

And ya, as the wedding is in 66 days, I best get going on these new works in progress!!  First up, a signature quilt for the guest table at the reception.  Jessi wanted a quilt where everyone that visits the reception can sign their name and leave a little note.   So I pulled out my cherished Folktale Layer Cake by Lella Boutique and did some quilt math.  I figured with 1 Layer Cake and 1 Yard of Background Fabric I can get 78 full blocks and 12 half blocks to make a "wall" effect.  I have all of the blocks made now and just need to start laying them out in rows.   Is this something you would like a PDF of when it is finished??  If so, just leave me a comment and I will whip one up :)

Next up . . . I asked Jessi and Trey to pick a quilt that I could make for their bed, in what will be their new home.  Jessi has always been a huge fan of Nordic Nights so I wasn't surprised at all when she picked this out.  Then she pursued through lots and lots of Fat Quarter Bundles (the stash just keeps growing, tee hee hee) and  finally landed on the Woodland and Wildflowers Bundle by Fancy That Design House.   I think this is going to be just gorgeous!!!

And since this is Jessi . . . who always likes to have a super detailed plan and a vision of what it will look like when it is all done . . . I drafted up a sketch.  Isn't it just so pretty, and I know it is going to be just amazing when it is all done!!  Which means I should probably get to pressing and cutting pretty quick!!

And finally, I wanted to make a special quilt just for the new groom!!  All of my kids have recieved lots of quilts over the years, so I wanted to make sure the new family members felt wrapped in love as well.  for Michelle I made the Fairy Garden quilt that hung at their reception.  Treyson on the other hand is pure cowboy  . . . so when I saw the Cowboys Layer Cake from Riley Blake Designs I knew it would be the perfect fit.   I am planning on making him the Jacks Quilt from the Cover of my Fast and Fun Lap Quilts book as it could also be taken to look like spurs ;)  This is going to be a fun one!!!

And totally funny, while finding the Cowboys Storyboard to link here, I found that Rifle Paper Company is designing a Cowgirls line coming out next March!!  Maybe I will have to make a matching quilt for our new Cowgirl!!  She already has bought cowgirl boots for when they visit the farm, I envision her being full cowgirl in no time at all.  So fun!!!

So that is what I am working on now :)  What are your Works in Progress this Week??

Precious and Too Precious Quilts and Free PDF Patterns!!

Wow, today's post has been a long time coming.   I was going through my files trying to tidy things up and realized while I finished these 2 quilts back in 2022, I never posted them because I still needed to work on the PDF patterns.   So with a little computer work . . .  finally . . .  I am thrilled to be sharing these Precious and Too Precious Quilts with you all!!!   And there is a free PDF Pattern for the Precious Quilt (White Background) as well as a free PDF Pattern for the Too Precious Quilt (Scrappy Print Background)

I designed the Precious quilt to be a basic chain with some hearts added in.  It really is so cute, and a perfect little lap quilt!   It uses 2 Charm Packs and a Background fabric.   Obviously, the pattern is super versatile and would look great in whatever charm packs you choose!   And of course, you don't have to do a white background, it would look super fun with a dark background as well ;)

When I finished the Precious quilt, I still had lots of fabric leftover (I was starting with fat quarters instead of charm packs) so I decided to see if I could switch out the fabric placement.   Precious is all about lots of white space, so I wanted to see what happened when I put the pretty prints in the background and made the chain a nice dark accent!!   And that is how we came about with Too Precious!!!  It uses 16 Fat Quarters and 1 1/2 yards of an accent print . . . I used my favorite Lead Grunge.   Didn't it just come together so great!!!  I  just love the idea of making s super scrappy background with a fabric line, it is like taking Low Volume backgrounds one step farther.   And it is just so cute!!

Both the Precious and Too Precious quilts are lap size and finish at 56" x 72".   They are a super fast make,  great for when you need to whip up something special in a hurry.  But yes, they are two separate patterns as the fabric requirements are quite different.  Same process, but just different fabrics.  You can find the  FREE PDF Precious Pattern Here and the FREE PDF Too Precious Pattern Here  ;)

When it came time to quilt mine I knew I wanted to make the chain pop.   And what better way then a dense background filler and leaving the chain and hearts unquilted.   So for one I did all over swirls, and for the other, all over echoed paisleys.  Isn't it just so fun how it makes the chain just stand out!!   They will be just perfect to snuggle up in.

And those are my Precious and Too Precious quilts !! I hope you have enjoyed this post. Oh, and if you make your own quilts, I would love to see them!!! You can share your quilt with me on social media using hashtag #happyquiltingwithmc and tagging @happyquiltingmc or email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com. I can't wait to see your Precious and Too Precious quilts!!!

Thank you so much for popping in and sharing this finish with me!!!  I really can't believe that these just totally fell through the cracks, but I am so glad I found them again and am now sharing them ;)

Have a Happy Quilting Day!!!

Playful Posies Class Finishes!!

Sorry it's been a little quiet around here, we are for sure in all Summer mode.   Lots of family and food and it is oh so great!!  But I wanted to pop on and share a little Playful Posies Inspiration.  In case you missed it . .  . Playful Posies is the July $5 Pattern of the Month  And wouldn't you know it, I taught this class back in January at the Cedar Quilt Retreat and just had 2 class members share the quilt top finishes with me!!!  So now, I can share them with you :)

This first Playful Posies Quilt is by Jeannine Hart.  She made the twin size quilt and used gorgeous Kaffe Fassett prints to make her flowers.  And isn't it just so stunning!!!  I love how happy and bright these posies are, it really was an awesome layer cake of prints to use and made such a fabulous finish!!  Way to go Jeannine!!!   And yes, now I totally want to make one in Kaffe  as well ;)

And the second Playful Posies finish is from LuAnn Brown.  She also mad ethe twin size.  And as you can see on this twin size bed, it has the perfect amount of drape to it ;)   I am not sure what layer cake LuAnn used (If you know, drop me a line in the comments and I will update this :)   but I just love the soft tones and gorgeous colors!!   Isn't it fun to see the same design looking totally different thanks to the fabrics.  It's one of my favorite things about teaching!!

So ya, soft of bright, this quilt is going to look amazing in whatever Layer Cake you choose!!  And just as a reminder . . . You don't have to use a white background.  Here is the picnic size Playful Posies Barbara made with Poppie Cotton  with a gorgeous Navy background.  Dark colors in background can really make your colors just pop!!

So ya, if you haven't picked up your Playful Posies for just $5.00 all this month, now is the time to grab it, grab a Layer Cake, and get sewing some Posie blocks!!  You are just going to love making this pattern ;)

Thanks for popping in today :)   I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!

$5 Pattern of the Month - Playful Posies!!!

It's July, how did that happen???  With the new month we have a new $5 Pattern of the Month here at Happy Quilting!!!  And July is all about  Playful Posies .  And it is just $5 all month long!!!

The  Playful Posies Pattern can be found in my Etsy Shop in both a Paper version as well as a PDF version and both versions will be marked down to $5.00 for the month July.   This is such a fun quilt to make and would be perfect for so many lovely occasions.   It comes together quicker than you would think it would too with lots of chain piecing ;)  It is rated Beginner Friendly as well as Layer Cake Friendly.

Playful Posies  has 6 size options.  The quilt design uses lots of stitch and flip to create those little flowers, but the nice thing is, all of the diagonal matching seams are nested, so you get beautiful perfect points every time!!    You can really create a stunning Summer quilt in whatever size works best for you!!  The pattern is great for mastering your stitch and flip (use your Diagonal Seam Tape so you don't have to draw the lines!!) and doing lots of chain piecing.

Need some ideas for your Playful Posies Quilt??  This is such a versatile design it would look good in so many different prints!!!  Here are some new arriving fabric collections mocked up . . .  Just to give you some fun ideas of what you can do with this pattern!!

Here is the Lap Size in a First Blooms 10" Stacker by Heather Peterson.  Doesn't this just sing of happy summer time picnics!!  I choose a low volume from the line to use for the background and it just works perfectly with all of those happy bright colors!!!  I so want to make this quilt ;)

And it is always fun to use a Grunge background (it truly is my all time favorite basic for backgrounds!!)   This is the Twin Size in Frivolity Layer Cake by Sweetfire Road and I used Grunge Bellini for the background.   This grunge has hints of gold, pink, and brown, so I figured it would be the perfect background for this line of pink, gold, brown, and green ;)   It just sets off the prints so perfectly!!

And if you are a fan of all things Regency . . . Here is the Picnic size in the new Emma 10" Stacker from Jane Austen's House !!!    Doesn't it just make a classic quilt!!  It makes me want to sit under a tree and pluck petals from a daisy :)  I used Shades Linen for the background and it is the perfect compliment to let the richness of all these colors and prints just shine!!

And finally, I did a Child size mockup.   And if you are going to go Child Size, you need a fun, happy, bright print!!  So here it is in  Superbloom Layer Cake by Robin Pickens!  And using Robin's basic,  Dotty Thatched  in Carnation is the perfect color pop to really make this quilt all girl!!!   Isn't it just so sweet ;)

And that is my $5.00 Pattern of the Month!!!   July 2025 is all about the Playful Posies Pattern!!!   You are going to have so much fun making all of these adorable little flowers blowing in the wind ;)        And of course,  if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to me ;)  And when you make your Playful Posies Quilts I would love to see them!!!  You can email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com or add it to social media with  #happyquiltingwithmc and #playfulposiesquilt ;)  I can't wait to see your Quilts!!!

It's the last day in June and that means I get to share the newest Sew Sampler Box!!  This month's theme is Midsummer Magic and I am just over the moon about it!!  Probably because it has Full Moon Forest in it, so exciting ;)

I mean, how can you not be excited when you open a box to find the entire collection of  Full Moon Forest !!  I just love how happy and bright Tula Pink prints are, they just make me smile!!   And how cute is the Wise Guys pattern, it is a perfect fit for the fabrics!!

And the notions for this month are just so cute!!  The Creative Grids Square Ruler is going to be so handy!!  I love a good little ruler ;)   And the Magic Clips are just so cool.  I am excited to try them out.   And ya know, I always love my some more Aurifil Thread, and it's PURPLE!!

And were are on to block 3 of this Flowering QAL!!  .  I am using  50 Years of Moda!!!  I had to change around the different prints in this month's to keep the "leaf" idea going and to have enough of certain prints, but I really like the way it came together ;)   I really am excited to see this one all done!!

And that is June Sew Sampler Box. And before I sign off . . .speaking of mail that I love to get from my good friends at Fat Quarter Shop . . . Look what just arrived!  How perfect is this box of Sweet Snips!!   The 6" and 3" scissors have been some of my all time favorites for some time now and I can't wait to try out the 8" set!!   And I mean, how can you not love the cute box set!!!  So fun ;)

Double Dutch featuring Plant Based Expression Batiks

Today I am so very excited to share another new Batik Quilt finish with you. I am just so in love with all of the new fabric collections in Expression Batiks! They are just so fantastic, and this new Plant Based Collection totally caught my eye, as I just love anything with purple!!! But I also loved the color groupings and I knew right aways it would make a perfect Double Dutch Quilt and here it is.

Like I said, Double Dutch is all about color grouping. As I went through the line, I was so happy to find that I could easily group the colors into 4's so I could make 4 blocks in each color. I was one short on the pinks so I grabbed an extra pink from my stash and away I went!! I also loved taking all of those darker greens and moving them to the outside to make a lovely border. It is a great eye stopper and matches so well with the binding. But I have to say . . . my all time favorite thing about this line is the Sugar Cookie Print. It is the one neutral print in the line and I just love it as the background fabric! Don't you just love all of that happy pop of color in the print? A super happy combination!

The Double Dutch is Fat Eighth/Quarter Friendly, depending on what size quilt you want to make.  So you can just grab a bundle and get piecing. The pattern also comes with 5 size options, so you can make from a baby size all the way to a queen/king size ;) The quilt shown here is a picnic size and with the added borders it is closer to a Queen Size.   It is going to make such a lovely wedding gift!!   And I just love how the offset layout gives the look of windmills spinning in the breeze.

And while this might look a little complex, the Double Dutch Pattern is truly is a beginner quilt with one basic quilting techniques.   And that is No-Waste Flying Geese. And if you have never made No-Waste Flying Geese, trust me, you are going to love this method of Flying Geese! And as you can see, these Geese are rather on the large size, so you have a little more wiggle room as you learn the technique. Two geese paired together make a cute little "house" and 4 make a neighborhood.

And this was quilted with gorgeous feathers and a loose traveling loop de loop design!! My amazing MIL, Barbara did the quilting on this and it is just beautiful. It has added so much lovely texture to the quilt and just makes me want to cuddle up in it with a good book!

And that is my Double Dutch Quilt featuring the brand new Plant Based Expression Batiks . I hope you have enjoyed this post and consider making your own Double Dutch Quilt!!! And if you do, I would love to see them! You can share your projects with me on social media with the hashtags #happyquiltingmc and #doubledutchquilt and tagging @happyquiltingmc or email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com. I can't wait to see your Double Dutch Quilts!!

Thank you so much for sharing this finish with me! I have just found such a joy in Batiks and can't wait to share more Expression Batiks quilts with you all. I love how happy and bright you can make these quilts as they just make ya smile! Thank you so much to my wonderful friends at Riley Blake for having so many amazing Batiks to choose from so I can just keep making more happy quilts!

I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Day!

Trixie for SUU!!!

Yup, today I get to share another SUU Quilt in my favorite Red, White, and Black color combo!!! Last summer at the Panguitch Quilt Walk , I managed to squeeze in a class.   I almost got all my blocks done in class which was good, because I found I needed them last week when there arose a sudden need for an SUU quilt (someone special was retiring ;)  So I finished up the quilt top, added quilting and binding and tada . . .  my SUU Trixie Quilt and the pattern is by Hello Melly Designs.

This was a super fun class from a year ago. It's always fun when the blocks are just in two different color layouts as the chain stitching doesn't require a lot of thought ;)     For this version I went with all solids.   I just love geometric quilts in solids, they really make all of the secondary designs just pop!!!  And I know I have said it before, but    I am just so glad my Alma Mater has Red, White, and Black for the school colors as I never get tired of making quilts in this color combo.

And once again, I added an SUU layered applique to the corner of the quilt. You can really do just about anything with this layered applique technique!!   You can find the step by step tutorial here for layered applique :)   It is just the perfect way to finish off these School Quilts!!

When it came time to quilt this Trixie Quilt I decided on an all over swirl ;)  It is a great go to that adds lots of texture and always looks awesome on a geometric quilt.       And of course, a red thread was perfect for this quilt and I just love how it pops on the white and black.

And that is my SUU Trixie Quilt.  The pattern has several size options and I made the Throw Size 68" x81" so it will be great for cuddling up in during a cold game :) And this one has already been gifted and has a happy new home with a friend.  Quilty hugs are the best!!!

Thanks again for popping in for another quilt finish!!

I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!

The Liberty Box Is Lit!!!

It's that time of year . . . when the Annual Liberty Box arrives!!!    And as my 13 year old would say, it is Lit!!!  Wow, this year's box is just stuffed full of so much Patriotic Quilting Goodness!!!   I can't wait to dive in and get cutting and sewing!

I was thrilled to find this super festive Stars and Stripes Forever Bundle with my Liberty Box!!   I mean, how cute are the tiny Uncle Sam hats . . .  and the pinwheels and trucks, love it!!   And that Gleaming Pattern is going to be a fun one to put together with all of those pretty points so excited :)   And it is even the perfect size for a QOV, double bonus!

And the notions that  Fat Quarter Shop sent along with the Liberty Box are just so fun this year :)  I love this little Mini Cooler Bag!!!  It is the perfect size for a few popsicles of a few cans of soda :)  I think it is going to be going up the mountain a lot this summer ;)  The Lori Holt Americana Charm is just that, absolutely charming!!    And the Stars and Stripes Minin Cutting Mat is so cute, these always come in handy when I am teaching and someone needs a small trimming mat ;) And of course, I can never have enough Superior Thread, love it!!

I can't wait to get started on my Gleaming Quilt!!  It is just going to be so perfect for fireworks!!    And if you want to make your own as well . . . there are a few more Liberty Box's available, but hurry, they are going fast!!

Hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!
