Shine On Quilt with Free PDF Pattern!

Today, I am super excited to be sharing this new Shine On quilt in beautiful Expressions Batiks along with a Free PDF Pattern for making your own! Shine On has been in my little sketch book to create ever since our trip to Germany last year (more on that in a minute).   And I am just so thrilled because the quilt finish is even better than I had dreamed! Don't you just love it when that happens! Basically, this quilt just makes me smile :) It truly does just Shine On!!

How beautiful are all of those little patchwork squares in those stunning Seaside Sunset batiks!!  And the best thing is, Shine On is made with quite a lot of strip piecing so it comes together a lot quicker than it looks.   And Strip Piecing means it is also Jelly Roll/Rolie Polie Friendly so you can grab a Happy and Bright Roll and the Free Shine On PDF Pattern and get making your own!  And what really makes this quilt "Shine" is the beautiful batiks, and the contrasting white accent and black background.  It really gives the quilt that stained glass effect!!

Which is where the inspiration from this quilt came from.  While visiting Germany, I snapped this shot (from a distance, sorry it's a bit blurry) of a beautiful stained glass window in the Cologne Cathedral.  I was just drawn to all of those tiny pixelated squares of color framed in the gorgeous windows.  So when I got home, I started to play with a few sketched images of how I could "recreate" my own version. I loved all of the square piecing, but I needed a little "structure".   And that made me think of my Shine Quilt Tutorial that I did back in 2018.   And I knew right away, I had the structure, I just needed to change the placement of the prints and background.  And then from Shine and a Cologne Cathedral window came Shine On!!

Shine On finishes at 66" x 88" so it is a perfect size for a twin size bed or would make a nice cuddle quilt on the couch.    And truly, it comes together super fast considering the size of the quilt and how many little squares it is made of.  And you can't help but just smile when you are making it because it is just so full of happy color goodness.     So download your Shine On PDF Pattern, grab a happy bright Jelly Roll/Rolie Polie, 2 yards of white, 2 yards of black, and away you go!!

When it came time to quilt my Shine On quilt I knew right away that I was going to do my all over Wavy Orange Peel.   I mean, when you have a beautiful grid like that in the piecing, you just have to take advantage of it.   And "wavy" orange peel does not require rulers, so it is just free motion fun.  And it gives such a great finish with so much amazing texture.   And for that added pop of color goodness, I used a Rainbow Variegated thread and it just makes me so happy.   It was the perfect finish for the this Shine On quilt!!

And that is my Shine On Quilt !! I hope you love this quilt just as much as I do and make your own. And if you do, I would love to see them!!!   You can share your quilt with me on social media using hashtags #happyquiltingwithmc and tagging @happyquiltingmc or email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com. I can’t wait to see your Shine On quilts!!!

Thank you so much for popping in with me to share this new Shine On quilt finish with me.  And yes, we finally got some snow, and I love how the white background just makes the chain in the design pop all the more ;)

I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!

GO! Sparkle and Shine Quilt and AccuQuilt-Along!!!

I am so excited to share some secret sewing today!!! It's always fun to play with tiny piecing,  but it is equally fun to do Super Big Piecing!!!  And when AccuQuilt shared they were making a 16" Cube Set, I was all over designing up something big and bold!!!!   And here she is . . . Sparkle and Shine :)    Isn't it just so fun!!!    And there is a  free Sparkle and Shine PDF Pattern , that you can download right here :)

I used some beautiful Speckled Basics by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Moda  in Metallic Black and Metallic White.  You know I just love the shiny!!   And with such big and bold piecing, the shiny really makes all of the negative space pop!!

The Sparkle and Shine Quilt  finishes at 72" x 72" so it is a picnic size quilt.   And just in case you want to see it in an opposite layout . . . here is a dark background and light piecing!!  Or you could always go two toned . . . truly, the options are endless!!  But any fabrics you choose are going to make for a great quilt!!

For the Sparkle and Shine Quilt you use the entire 16" Cube Set!!!  So the Cube Block Set, as well as the Angles and Corners Companion Sets.  And of course, the pattern will work for any size GO! Cube Set, it will just make for a smaller quilt.

And when it came time to quilt it, I wanted to do something with lots of curves and flow to accent all of the points in the piecing.   So I opted for a large swirls.  It's always a favorite and adds such yummy texture and movement.  Just so pretty!!!

And that is my Sparkle and Shine Quilt!!    I hope you love it as much as I do ;)    And if you want to make your own, you can download the free Sparkle and Shine PDF Pattern and get piecing.   And when you are done I would love to see it!!!    You can share a picture on social media with #happyquiltingwithmc and tag me at @happyquiltingmc or you can always email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com.  I can't wait to see your Sparkle and Shine Quilts!!

Oh, and did you notice that AccuQuilt-Along part in the title . . . Well I have some fun news to share!!!  While Sharing the Launch of the new 16" Cube Set, Erica and Pam shared that AccuQuilt will be using my Sparkle and Shine Quilt design to host an AccuQuilt-Along.  How exciting is that!!!  You can see the announcement on the YouTube Video at about 1 hr 13 min.      You can also see all of the details on the AccuQuilt-Along here!!!   I am so excited, I am totally thinking I might just have to squeeze in this quilt along and make another Sparkle and Shine Quilt!!  (I am thinking scrappy low volume prints and a dark background, how fun would that be!!)

Thanks for popping in and sharing this quilt finish with me today!!

I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!

How They Shine Quilt - Pattern Coming Soon!!!

Today I am thrilled to be sharing my newest quilt finish with you featuring the gorgeous Petal Song Fabric Collection by Corri Sheff!! Corri is so amazing with prints and color, and I just love her work!!! I used her Sonnet Dusk fabric in my Treasured Quilt, and knew I just had to create with her new Petal Song fabric ;) So I went back to a favorite quilt from years past . . . How They Shine!! And the fun news is, since this was made for a compilation book and the publishers have now closed their doors, I can turn it into a Happy Quilting Pattern!!! That will be coming soon, but for now, I get to teach this quilt design at Garden of Quilts and I am so very excited!!!

This How They Shine quilt pattern is so much fun to make and it is Fat Quarter friendly, so you can just grab a Petal Song Bundle ( or a favorite Fat Quarter Bundle stashed away) and get to cutting and piecing in no time!!!   All you need is to add some background fabric and binding fabric. I used Blossom on White Rose Gold Sparkle for my background fabric and I just love how it adds a little pop in all of that beautiful white space! And for the binding I used Bee Cross Stitch Raisin and it was the perfect compliment to all of those gorgeous colors!!!

And while this might look a little complex, it truly is a great beginner quilt with some easy to learn techniques.   It is made with Half Square Triangles, Stitch and Flip units, and a few angled seams, but don't worry, I help you nest them ;) You make half the blocks in one layout and then do the other half in the reverse layout which creates all kinds of awesome secondary designs. So fun!!!

And when it came time to quilt mine, I opted for a favorite of mine. The all over wavy arch free motion design. This is always a favorite to do when I have a "square grid" in the piecing. And the way the grid worked out, it combines blocks to make the square, which pulls the blocks together all the more and highlight the secondary patterns. Double bonus!!! I used my favorite 402 So Fine thread as it blends perfectly into the white as well as the prints.

And just look at all of that yummy texture. I quilted a simple figure 8 "border" around the outside of the quilt to make the "square grid" work, and I just love the way it frames up the quilt. This quilt is so ready to be snuggled in!!! And the nice thing is, the How They Shine pattern will have multiple size options, so you can make whatever size you need. The pattern will be released on Sept 18th and will be on sale for it's debut.  (Along with a few more new patterns!!)    I would have loved to have them in my shop already, but between the Quilting Cruise that I am currently on and Garden of Quilts next week, I just can't get them listed until then . . . but soon!!!

And that is my How They Shine quilt! I hope you have enjoyed this post and consider making your own How They Shine Quilt very soon!!! And if you do, I would love to see them! You can share your projects with me on social media with the hashtags  #happyquiltingwithmc and #howtheyshinequilt and tagging @happyquiltingmc or email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com. I can't wait to see your How They Shine Quilts!!

Thank you so much for popping by and sharing this finish with me!!

I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!

Tutorial Throwback Thursday - Shine

St. Patrick's Day was this week, and I totally forgot and didn't even where green.   So crazy.   But we can still celebrate it here onTutorial Throwback  Thursday !!   You all know I love Irish Chain Quilts, and have already shared the basic Single Scrappy and Triple Scrappy versions . . . so today, I thought it would be fun to share another twist on an Irish Chain Quilt . . . So for today's throwback, we are going back just 2 years to the Shine Quilt!!!

Shine is a wonderful twist on a single Irish Chain Quilt adding a simple 9 patch to the center of the chain.     And the quilt is super easy to make and oh so fun!!!     The entire quilt is made with Strip Piecing and I even have a Subcutting Speed Up Tutorial  to make that part go fast as well.    It finishes at 66"x 82" so it makes a great snuggle size quilt and would work great on a twin size bed as well!!!    And there is even a printable version of this Shine tutorial, so great!!!!

And I love that this quilt uses ombre!!!!   I just love the beautiful shades of color you get with an Ombre Jelly Roll.   And the fun thing is, V & Co. has made lots of variations of Ombre, including their newest Fairy Dust that will be coming out soon, and it has metallic stars, so excited!!!  It really is the Ombre that just makes this quilt Shine!!!   And it is the perfect use for a Ombre Jelly Roll.

In fact, you even use every little bit of the jelly roll strips as the extras are used for a scrappy binding.   Isn't that just so fun!!!!   I always love a scrappy binding!!!     And I quilted Shine with an all over swirl, because it is just fun and easy and fast.   All the things that go with this quilt!!!

And that is my Shine Quilt!!!     I hope you have enjoyed today's Tutorial Throwback Thursday!!!    To make your own Shine quilt  just click on any of the project name links for the free step by step tutorial.    And when you are done,  I would love to see your Quilts!!  You can email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com, post it to social media with #happyquiltingwithmc  or or add it to my flickr group here ;)  I can't wait to see your Bonnie Rose Quilts!!!!

GO! Born to Shine Quilt and Free Pattern!!!

I am so excited to share a new finish today!!! I have loved this quilt from the moment I finished designing it and I love the actual quilt all the more!!!   I just love combining AccuQuilt BOB Dies and when the new new GO! Enigma Star Die, was released, I knew it would pair perfectly with the GO! Tangled Star Die ;)   I mean, who doesn't love all the stars!!!   And then putting the blocks on point, so great!!    So this is Born To Shine and there is a  free PDF Pattern for it, that you can download right here :)

I used some beautiful Sparkler Basics by Riley Blake  in  Bear Lake, Navy, and White.  I was going for an "all boy look" for this baby quilt (oh, and an all girl one is in the works ;)    I just love the navy setting triangles, they really make the rest of the design pop and gives it a lot of movement ;)   And you know that I love the little bit of metallic in all of the Sparkler Basics, because ya gotta love shiny!!!

The Born to Shine Quilt finishes at 42" x 42" so it is a great baby size quilt.   It uses 2 blocks set on point, and of course, cutting them with the AccuQuilt BOB Dies makes it super fast.   Then it was just super happy piecing from that point.   And the layout of the blocks adds such a cool secondary design in the center of the quilt, it almost looks like curved piecing ;)

Below is a list of the dies I used, see which ones you already have in your die library and maybe add a few more ;)

And when it came time to quilt it, I wanted to do something with lots of curves and flow to accent all of the points in the piecing.   So I opted for a large swirls.  It's always a favorite and adds such yummy texture and movement.  Just so pretty!!!

And that is my Born to Shine Quilt!  I hope you love it as much as I do ;)   Isn't this picture AccuQuilt took of it just so great!!!  I love seeing it styled in a home setting.    And if you want to make your own, you can download the free PDF Born to Shine Quilt Pattern Here.   And when you are done I would love to see it!!!    You can share a picture on social media with #happyquiltingwithmc and tag me at @happyquiltingmc or you can always email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com.  I can't wait to see your Born to Shine Quilts!

Oh, and two fun little side notes . . . if you want to see this shared on YouTube, you can visit the Die Launch video.  It is shared towards the end of the show at 52:00 minutes in :)  And the second side note that I am so very excited about . . . Guess what design is on the packaging of the GO! Enigma Star Die. . . .Yup, GO! Born to Shine :)   Eeekkk, so very exciting :)

I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!

How They Shine featuring Hey Boo!!!

Today I am thrilled to be sharing my newest quilt finish!!!  I never get tired of making star quilts and I just love making my How They Shine quilt pattern ;)   I love the alternating of prints and backgrounds in the two blocks that create so many awesome secondary designs.   I figured it would be perfect for a new Halloween Quilt!!

I don't make a lot of Halloween quilts, because honestly, I don't like "Scary Halloween".  But this new Hey Boo line by Lella Boutique for Moda is so my kind of Halloween.   Cute Pumpkins, Adorable Ghosts, and awesome Pinks, Purples, and Greens added to the traditional Black and Orange!!!  I knew as soon as I saw Hey Boo that I had to make a quilt with it!!!  Hey Boo is truly just  Happy Halloween!!!

And while How They Shine  might look a little intense, it truly is a super fun and easy quilt to make with basic quilting techniques.   A few No-Waste Flying Geese, and some stitch and flip corners and you can whip these blocks up in no time.   And truly, the secondary diamonds created when Block A and B come together are just so fun :)  It really is a design that would work great for any Holiday, whether it be Halloween, Christmas, or 4th of July!!!

And when it came time to quilt mine, I tried something new to me.  I started with just loose wavy lines running down the length of the quilt but I spaced them out a bit more than normal.   Then I went back and added wavy loop de loop lines between the wavy lines.   I think it just adds such a fun touch of whimsy to the design.   And I just love it!!  I have a feeling I will be doing this again soon ;)

And like all of my Happy Quilting patterns,  the How They Shine Pattern has multiple size options, so you can make whatever size you like. This is the Picnic size that finishes at 80" x 80", but you can make it from a baby size all the way to a queen size ;)   How They Shine is  Fat Quarter Friendly, so you just need to grab a Bundle and some background fabric (I used the super happy Ghost Practical Magic Stars)  and get Happy Quilting!!

And that is my newest How They Shine quilt! I hope you have enjoyed this post and consider making your own How They Shine Quilt!!!

Thank you so much for popping by and sharing this finish with me :)  I can't wait to snuggle up with this quilt come Halloween ;)

I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!

Charming Baby Quilts Remix - Shine Bright!!!

I am so excited!!!  Today is the day :)  I have been sharing bits and pieces of my Charming Baby Quilts Remix ideas, sketches, and progress, and now I get to share the first finished remixed quilt . . . . and here it is the Shine Bright Remix quilt!!!!

Isn't this just so pretty!!!!  I just love how it turned out ;)   I remixed the original design by adding more blocks and making it twin size.  This Shine Bright remix quilt finishes at 74" x 92" so it is perfect for fitting on a bed or having a really nice large lap blanket to snuggle up in.    And It is just as easy to piece as the original, just make more blocks and add more sashing.  (Pattern Adjustment's here ;)

And speaking of the original, here is my Shine Bright quilt from Charming Baby Quilts.   This is such a great star quilt and I just love how fun it is in whatever size you make it!!!

For this Shine Bright remix, I used Poppie Cotton's new Woodland Songbirds fabric and I just love how beautiful and soft these prints and colors are.   This remix uses 6 Charm packs and 4 yards of background fabric.   And it really goes together fast and makes such a pretty finish!!!

And when it came time to quilt it, I decided I liked the quilting on the original Shine Bright so much that I wanted to make this one match :)  So all over Curly Q's it was.   I just love how all of that swirly goodness adds so much texture and movement to this quilt!!!

I mean, how can you not love that quilty texture!!!  Doesn't it just make you want to curl up in it with a good book ;)    And now I want to make this size again but make the background dark and the patchwork light.  Wouldn't that be fun.   A great way to use up some low volume charms as well ;)

So do you want to make your own Charming Baby Remix Shine Bright quilt??  Just download this free  PDF Shine Bright Remix Instructions  document.  You will need a copy of my Charming Baby Quilts book to make the Remix as the download just includes the alternations and not the complete instructions.  You use the book and the download together ;)

And that is my Shine Bright Remix quilt!!!  I hope you love it just as much as I do and want to make one of your own, either in the twin or baby size ;)  And if you do,  I would love to see it!!  You can email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com or post it to social media with the hashtag #happyquiltingwithmc and/or #charmingbabyquilts ;)  I can't wait to see your Shine Bright Quilts!!!

And for easy reference. . . This Shine Bright Charming Baby Quilt has been added to my Charming Baby Quilts, All the Quilts, All the Details post ;)  It's a great place to bookmark to see everything Charming Baby Quilts all in one place!!

And there will be more Charming Baby Quilt Remixes to come, so be sure to pop back in soon.

Thanks for stopping in today and I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Weekend!!

How They Shine in Prairie Christmas!!!

Today I am super excited to be sharing this beautiful quilt finish with you featuring the charming Prairie Christmas Collection by Amanda Corcoran for Poppie Cotton!! I just love Poppie Cotton's collections, and am always so happy to sew with them.   I am just loving quilts with dark backgrounds , and I was super excited to make a How They Shine quilt to see how those stars just shine on a dark background.  Isn't it just so fun!!!

This How They Shine Quilt  is so much fun to make and it is Fat Quarter Friendly so you can just grab a bundle and add your background fabric. I used Blue Ribbon Dark Blue Country Confetti for my background fabric and it truly is becoming an all time favorite background :)  (I have plans to use it a few more times in some future quilts, it's just so pretty!!)    I just love how it makes all of those charming  Prairie Christmas  prints just pop!!

And while this might look a little difficult, it truly is a great beginner quilt with basic quilting techniques.   The stars are actually made with Stitch and Flip corners, so no flying geese in this one.  But it is a great quilt for learning all the little tricks for lining up points.  And my favorite thing about this pattern is the secondary designs created int he corners of the blocks because of the alternate fabric layouts.  Aren't those double diamonds just so great!!!

And here I have to thank my amazing MIL Barbara.  I have been crazy busy, so Barbara did the quilting and piecing on this one for me :)  She quilted an all over curly swirl and it is just so pretty adding all of those curves with he straight piecing.     And I just love how the navy thread pops on all of those pretty prints!!   So great :)

And like all of my Happy Quilting patterns, the the nice thing is, the How They Shine Pattern  has multiple size options, so you can make whatever size you like. This is the twin size, but you can make it from a baby size all the way to a queen size ;)   And again, it is an amazing pattern if, (like probably most of us) you have lots and lots of fat quarters that need some busting!!

And that is my How They Shine Quilt! I hope you have enjoyed this post and consider making your own How They Shine Quilt!!!

Thank you so much for popping by and sharing this finish with me and thank you to my wonderful friends at Poppie Cotton for always letting me play with their gorgeous fabrics!!!

I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!
