Well, the Super Scrappy Triple Irish Chain is about two-thirds quilted and I am so excited with how it is turning out. But this morning, it was time to start thinking about binding. Since this is a "Super Scrappy" quilt, it only makes sense to add a scrappy binding, right ;) So I pulled out my trusty little basket of Binding Scraps. Every Time I have a bit of binding left over I toss it in here and then wait for the right project. I have made 5ish scrappy bindings from this basket and I love it every time!!!
And I was super excited to find that I had quite a few leftover grey, yellow, and navy binding bits left. After some quick measuring and a bit of adding, I realized I only needed to add 3 leftover jelly roll strips. (Those always come in handy!!)
And 5 minutes later, I had a super scrappy binding strip to match my Super Scrappy Triple Irish Chain that will only take me a few minutes to iron because there are only 3 pieces that need to be ironed. Yippee!!! Seriously, I love scrappy bindings and I love using leftover bindings to make them. Such a time saver and oh so much fun to remember all of the quilts that you originally made with each scrappy binding piece.
So what about you . . . Whats your scrappy binding experience??? Love Em, Leave Em, or Depends on the quilt??? Have your used Binding Leftovers??
Oh, and a quick note before I sign off . . . I hope everyone is having a wonderful Holiday Season. Ours has been jam packed with lots of family and friends, which has been absolutely lovely, but has gotten me a bit behind on answering emails. Sorry if I haven't gotten back to questions and comments, I will be catching up soon ;) And I found this fun email in my inbox when attempting to catch up this morning . . . Happy Quilting reached 7000 followers on Bloglovin!!!!
Thank you all!!! That sure is a fun way to start out your week and almost a new year!!!
Alright, time for me to sign off so I can catch up on emails and then finish quilting my quilt so I can get this scrappy binding added. It remains to be see if this will be the last finish of the year of the first finish of the new year ;)
I love scrappy bindings - a way to use up those left over pieces instead of having them end up in the scrap basket untouched for years. I do not do a scrappy binding though if the quilt is say a two color quilt or very formal type.
ReplyDeleteI love scrappy bindings -- i have a bag full of end pieces and pieces that have ended up in scrap bags from friends and I am looking forward to using more scrappy bindings for my charity quilts next year.
ReplyDeleteMost of my quilts are scrappy quilts so I use scrappy binding all the time.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on reaching such a big milestone with your followers! I can't say I am surprised - your posts are always upbeat, inspiring, yet real. You are always an encouragement with your creativity, achievements and many delightful finishes! And your quilt-alongs are fantastic! I am always happy to find a notice for one of your posts in my in-box. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love using bits of leftover bindings too. I also keep the remaining pieces of binding in a plastic ziplock bag, not as pretty as your basket. I tend to use them on small quilts as I make a few premature baby quilts for the local hospital and doll quilts to gift to little girls in the family or neighbourhood.
ReplyDeleteI too love scrappy bindings. But then I love everything scrappy.
ReplyDeleteI too love scrappy bindings. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love the concept; so far, though I'm only collecting. Don't have enough to use.
ReplyDeleteI love scrappy bindings!! And what an excellent idea for leftover binding! Do you attach the binding pieces together end to end, or on the diagonal. How's about a mini tutorial? ;) I think scrappy quilts are gonna be an even bigger rage this coming year. Yay!! XX!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on reaching 7000 followers!! yayy I'm one of them :) and yes I love scrappy bindings. Happy New Year to you and your family :))
ReplyDeleteI am going to have one more bag with scraps now - the bag with binding scraps :) thank you for the idea :)
ReplyDeleteWow 7000 followers, wouldn`t it be amazing if they all left a comment on the blog page!! I am very much a scrappy binder but usually use scrapf of the fabrics used in the quilt not additional ones
ReplyDeleteI use scrappy binding but never thought about using left overs from other quilts. You are a genius! You are my favorite blogger, keep the ideas coming! I am also going to do your double Irish chain, it's on my list any ways. So much quilting and so little time!😉
ReplyDeleteI love a good scrappy binding! I wrap my bindings on old spools and the leftovers I leave on there with a label telling me how much is left...yes I know I'm a nut!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Melissa on reaching 7000 followers!! Wow, that is special!
ReplyDeleteYes, I love scrappy bindings and find I am using them more and more on my quilts. Thank you for this idea of keeping binding scraps in a separate spot, ready for a future project. Good idea!
Never thought about saving the bindings in their own seperate scrap box. I think I will have to start!
ReplyDeleteDepends on the quilt but overall I love scrappy bindings and save all the bits every time I bind a quilt just for that purpose....
ReplyDeleteI love scrappy binding. I should make a "leftover binding" basket...
ReplyDelete"Funny" story: I'm working on finishing up the quilt tops in my closet (to make room for 2015 projects <--the year, not two thousand and fifteen projects...). One of my quilts I didn't already have binding for (which is odd) or even fabric for it. So I went through my scraps and pulled out the fabric from the quilt and made a scrappy binding. I'm half finished stitching it down, and my 3-yr-old gets in my sewing room and finds my scissors. Four holes in the quilt, three of them through the binding (thankfully all in one small-ish area and not through my embroidered label). After crying (a lot) and taking a step back, I told my husband, "Oh well. I wanted more purple in the binding anyway." So, I'm in the middle of replacing the cut pink piece with a purple piece (after I mend the cuts of course).
Congrats on your 7000 :)
ReplyDeleteIt never once occurred to me to save the bits of binding, but I will from now on! Wow wee Melissa, that is one huge accomplishment having 7000 followers! Congratulations! I think I am follower # 6,777. LOL. I don't know how you would ever keep up with comments from that many, so let yourself relax and just know everyone understands. Happy New Year!.
ReplyDeleteErin Marie, someday the holes your 3 year old cut into your quilt will be a fond memory... I kid you not. (((hugs))) My son had a fascination for scissors, so I know of what I speak.
