Sorting Selvages

So as I attempted to stuff a few more selvages in my little scrap selvage drawers this morning and had a fun little thought process.  Here is how it went.
First, I came to the conclusion that the drawers were are already stuffed to the brim.  Second, I asked myself "why I was still saving these", and answered myself that "they are to make that Selvage Quilt Someday".  And then Third, it was like that little bolt of lightening hit my brain and said "Why Not Today!!!".   It's a New Year and what better time to start one of those "squeak a little in here and there" project than the New Year.   So I pulled the Selvages Drawers out of the scrap drawer bins. . .

And I started sorting!!!  I haven't picked a pattern yet, but I do know that I want to make my selvage quilt in some kind of rainbow layout, so I am sorting the selvages by color.     I have a few designs that I like, but want to look around a bit and be sure there is't a great selvage design I am missing.  So if you know of one, just give me a shout out in the comments.

EEEkkk, this is just so fun!!!    I have been saving selvages for 4 years now and I just am tickled pink that they are finally being pulled out of the drawer.  This is going to be my no deadline, work on it here and throughout  2017 project and I just couldn't be more excited for it!!!  By the end of 2017 I will have a selvage quilt!!!!  There, put it in words, goal made!!!

So now, back to more Sorting ;)

  6. I am a selvage keeper, too, so I know what you mean when you questioned yourself! I know your quilt will be marvelous, Melissa! Just think of the extra storage you'll have when it's completed!

  7. Hi, Melissa! I would follow Annemieke's lead and check on Pinterest - there were lots of ideas for selvedge quilts, and many very beautiful! I'm envious that you're getting to sew today - we're having thunderstorms here and I'm afraid to get on my machine for fear of the lightning! Oh, well - maybe another day! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  9. I have a lot of selvages too. I am saving them in a big jar, but it is getting a little tight in there now. I am interested to see what you have in mind.
    Happy new Year

  10. Selvages confuse me. I guess I think that by the time I sew a quarter inch along the bottom, most of the pretty printed part would be caught in the seam allowance. Or is the point to see the actual fabric? I don't save my selvages but feel like I'm missing out on a good thing, I'm just not sure what. LOL

  14. I, too, have started another selvage quilt. And for the very same reason, my colllection baggies are bursting at the seams. I have one that I snuggle under while I watch TV, it's totally scrappy and a metal folding chair with scrappy selvage seat and back. So I guess this will be my 3rd selvage project.

  15. I recently saw a beautiful basket quilt made with selvages! The selvages were used for the main portion of the simple basket. It really struck a chord with me and it is on my to-do list for this year.

How about a selvage sew along? That would be super fun!!!!

  16. How about something like this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/383509724503717439/ or maybe a spiderweb quilt. The only problem you might encounter with that is with bulky seams. Looking forward to seeing what you come out with.

  19. Like you, I've been saving selvages for years. Last fall I bought Modern Selvage Quilting by Riel Nason. I love the book and it gives lots of great tips for saving, cutting, sorting and using selvages. Last week I started on her "Side Stepping Over the Rainbow" quilt. I'm customizing it for me, but basically it's a column quilt of 14 columns wide by nine blocks (4.5x8.5") down. You alternate selvage blocks with solid (or in my case, made-fabric blocks). She used mostly primary and secondary colors, but I have so many selvages that I'm using tertiary colors too. See my December 31 post for more info. Can't wait to see what you do!

  20. I just started saving selveges because the were called for in the Splendid Sampler and though I had enough, I thought I might need them for a later block. I cut mine 1/2" wider than the top of the white. I figured it was to show the little color patches(the last one I cut had the colors in little watering can shapes. I am sticking them in a box and maybe in 4 years I will have enough to make a cute quilt.
I like the one where the selvage is the thread on a spool and the other that is a book case. I had seen this before but not in rainbow coloring.
