Radio Show Follow Up ;)

I want to say a huge Thank You to Pat Sloan for having me on her podcast last Monday!!!  Also a huge thank you  to everyone who tuned in to hear me  on American Patchwork and Quilting Radio!!!  It s oh so much fun!!!  If you were not able to listen live, you can still go to here and listen to the podcast ;)  And yes, I say Fun like a billion times in the podcast, what can I say, I am Happy Quilting :)

And I have been getting a few emails with questions on some of the things we discussed, so I wanted to follow up on those questions here.  So . . . Here are the "links" to more info on all of the fun little topics that Pat and I chatted about.

First off, we discussed my Splendid Sampler finish.  Several people have emailed me asking to see the finish.  So here it is, and you can go to my post here to read all about it's finish and process, and layout, and so on ;)

Second, Pat and I chatted about my blogs 8 year anniversary and the joy I have in writting and being able to share my love of quilting on this blog.   What I didn't say here, and wanted a do over the second I hung up the phone, was that I love that by blog allows me to interact with all of you.  I have made so many wonderful friends through this blog!!!!  I love reading your comments and can't thank you enough for your help when I find myself questioning what border print to use, or what way to quilt something.  You are always so great to step in and help!!!!   And that's why I keep coming back now for 8 years to write.   It's because of you all!!!

We also got talking about blogs and how they make it so much easier to share tutorials.  And I mentioned that I now have over 100 tutorials on the blog from the last 8 years and how I recently reorganized my tutorials to make them easier to find what you are looking for.   And I have had a few emails asking where to find these.   And the quick answer is the Tabs at the top of this page.  And for more details, I actually wrote a post here, with details on how things were reorganized and how to find what you are looking for ;)

And then Pat asked a bit about how I keep organized in keeping track of my projects.  And I shared some of the ways that I do that on the show that you can hear here.  Then we talked a little more about how I get the most out of each day.   I wrote up a post back here on my little "schedule" and how I can squeeze the most out of my day to try and be as productive as I can with the hours I have. (and as I mentioned on the show, that's kind of out the window in Summer ;)   My baby girl is going to 1st grade in the Fall so I am anticipating a little more sew time, but I figure I should probably leave some time for laundry, and dinner and the like ;)   But ya, for years now it has been chain stitch in the afternoon on 3 - 4 projects, and then Press in the evening after the kids go to bed while my sweethearts watches ESPN.  It works!!
But as I mentioned on the show,  I do try to have one or two quilts that I am working on in the midst of all of the "assembly line" quilts that are more long term that I make 1 block at a time so that I can still have that enjoyment of working of completing each block,  and seeing the quilt come together over a lengthy period of time.   A few of you emailed about my  newest Long Term Project, the Moda Dessert Sampler, and you can see more about its start here ;)

And I think that just about covers all of the questions that I have gotten since the radio show.  If you have a question that I missed following up on, please don't hesitate to email me at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com.   I just love hearing from you all.

Thanks again for Tuning In and have a Happy Quilting Day!!

Friendship Quilt Along Door Stop

When my wonderful friend Amanda Herring asked if I wanted to make a block from her new Friendship Quilt Along, I was totally in.  I absolutely love Applique and a lot of these blocks are all about super fun applique, and what better way to celebrate friendship than with a Quilt Along!!!   And since I knew I didn't have time to make the entire quilt, I turned my Warm Block into something I have been wanting for my sewing room forever, a cute little door stop ;)  I just love it!!!

This is the Friendship Quilt Along quilt and thanks to Amanda for the gorgeous picture!!!  This quilt is a celebration of the friendships we make and uses Amanda's newest fabric line, Hello Lovely.  Which as you can see, it just so pretty!!!   This week is only block 6, so if you haven't joined in yet, you still have plenty of time to get in on all the fun ;)

You need the Friendship Quilt Templates for a lot of the blocks.   And I loved working with these templates.  They are super sturdy and easy to use.   And the shapes are all wonderfully interchangeable, so I can see using them again and again on future projects ;)   I love to Machine Applique!!!    If you have never appliqued before, I have a basic Applique Video Tutorials over here and a more complex Layered Applique Tutorial over here.  Both will show you how I like to Machine Applique :)

And of course, if it is for my sewing room, you know it had to be purple right!!!   I picked out several shades of purple to make sure that the layered parts of the applique would stand out.  Then it was time to trace, cut, layer, and stitch :)

And before I knew it, I had this adorable Warm Block!!!  Isn't it just so cute ;)   I love, love, love all the blocks that Amanda has designed for the Friendship Quilt Along but I have to say the Warm Block Applique is my favorite!!!  And I had so much fun making it up.  It really is so fun to have some smaller projects in between big quilts for that quick finish satisfaction :)   But as I said, I didn't want this to become an orphan block, so it was time for a little more stitching.

I didn't take any pictures of how I turned this into a door stop, because honestly I was making it up as I went.  But I have to say, I was super excited with how it came together and it wasn't near as hard as I thought it was going to be.   I basically sewed the front and back together at the top, right sides together with the handle.  Then I cut two steep triangles for the sides and added them in, and then a rectangle for the bottom that I left a hole in the center to turn the project right side out to stuff.

And of course, I had lots of batting pieces left over to stuff it with.   Add a  little rice to make it heavy so it will hold the door open and whip-stitch the opening close.  And done ;)   Now all I have to do is wonder why I waited so long to make this super cute door stop!!!   Because that piece of batting stuffed under the door is no where near as perfect as this :)

And that is my Warm Block Door Stop.  And I love that every time I use it I will think of my good friend Amanda.   And that is what this quilt along is all about :)

Thanks for popping in this day and each and every day.  I am so very blessed to have this space and to share it with so many friends like you!!!

I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Weekend!!!

June Sew Sampler ( in July :)

I hope all of my friends here in the US had a great 4th of July!!!!   And with the 4th, I had a realization that June has come and gone, and I never shared my June Sew Sampler box.   Ya, I am so blaming it on the summer.  Gotta love the crazy fun pace of these few months :)   But this box was totally worth the wait to see because it was just full of so much amazing quilting goodness!!!

First off, you have to love Bonnie and Camille and everything they do!!!   And Bonnie and Camille Vintage Holiday,  I mean, how perfect for Christmas in July!!!   I got to play with Vintage Holiday way back in fall when I made this Christmas Cheer quilt for Moda  to have in their booth at Market.   And I totally fell in love with these fantastic prints.  So to find 2 Vintage Holiday Charm Packs in my box, So Excited!!!  You all know how I just love to collect charm packs!!!   And how adorable is that Thimbleblossoms pin!!!  I now have 5 enamel pins and I am so wanting to collect more.  I need to think up a fun way to display them ;)

And I am so excited about the other fun notions this month!!!  The Artbin  Case is perfect for storing this month's goodies as it fits 2 Charm Packs and the Cupcake Mix.   And of course, there is another awesome exclusive pattern designed for the fabric, but I have to say, I was most thrilled about the Cupcake Mix!!!   I have used a lot of Cake Mixes in the past, but I have just started trying a Cupcake Mix for my Dessert Sampler and they are so much fun!!   They just make tiny piecing so easy ;)

And of course, with a new box, there is a new Barn Block!!!  And I have to admit, this is a part of the reason this post is late this month.   Wow, was that a lot of tiny piecing!!!  But doesn't it just look so awesome :)    I decided to switch out the placement of the black and the grey for half of the blocks, just to mix it up.   It should be fun ;)

And that's my June Sew Sampler Box, shared in July ;)   Hey, at least that means I don't have to wait so long for the next Sew Sampler Box  to arrive.  And knowing my July schedule, it will be here before I know it ;)

I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!
