Tutorial Throwback Thursday - Poppies

I can't believe it is Thursday already.  Is anyone else having a hard time keeping track of the days.  Things just sort of blend all together ;)  Just keep rolling with it I suppose.  And what better way to roll, than with something super simple and super easy that it takes next to no thought to put it together.   But of course, it still looks super cute!!!   And so for today's Thursday , I thought it would be perfect to go back 3 years to the Poppies  quilt!!!    Isn't it just so happy with those pops of color!!!

Poppies  really is a fun quilt to make and is fantastic for beginners and experts alike.  It is a wonderful project for right now as everything seems just a little crazy, this is perfect for just some relaxing stitching!!!   And with lots of Stitch and Flip corners, you can make a bonus pillow with all of the scraps ;)  So fun!!!   But I just love how the layout of this quilt gives it such movement.  Almost like follow the bouncing ball ;)    It finishes at 66" x 81" so it makes a great size for snuggling up in or lying out in the sun!!

Poppies  is a Fat Quarter Friendly quilt and uses 20 Fat Quarters.  So you can easily grab a bundle and get stitching.   And with the larger piecing, it can really show off some of your larger scale prints.  I used Ava Rose by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs and I love the colors and how they pop!! (Especially that deep coral color!!!)   So just grab a fun colorful bundle that speaks to you and is just waiting to pop!!!

Poppies  also is perfect if you need to whip up a quilt for a Grad or a new Bride ;)  This original went to a special grad two years ago.  I love giving quilts as high school graduation gifts, it is just nice to think that they can go off to college with something to cuddle up in when they get a little homesick :)   And this design is perfect for lots of fun while still beings sweet and simple!!!

And that is my Poppies  Quilt!!!     I hope you have enjoyed today's Tutorial Throwback Thursday as much as I have!!!      To make your own Poppies  quilt  just click on any of the project name links for the free step by step tutorial.    And when you are done,  I would love to see your Quilts!!  You can email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com, post it to social media with #happyquiltingwithmc  :)   I can't wait to see your Poppies Quilts!!

Thanks for popping in today and sharing poppies with me!!!

So, how do you finish up those quilts???

Baste It, Quilt It, and Bind It!!  I know, I make it sound all so simple.  If you are new to quilting, and need some help with these last few steps, you can see my Video Tutorials that go over the basics of how to do this ;)  Also, there are some helpful free motion quilting tutorials if you are stuck on how you want to quilt your project ;)   I quilted mine with an all over Curly Q that I really love to use for sampler quilts as it makes for great texture and is simple enough not to take attention away from all of those fun blocks!!!

Once you have your quilt finished it is ready to be showcased in the Parade.  To be in the Parade, please send me an email at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com  with your favorite finished Charming Baby Sampler Quilt picture attached as well as your name the way you would like it listed with your photo, where you are from, and a Link if you would like me to link your picture . . .  Blog, Instagram, or Facebook will work great :)    You can email me anytime from now until the evening of May 26th and I will get you added to the Parade!!!

I am so looking forward to seeing everyone's finishes!!!  It has been so fun to see all of your quilt blocks each week and I can't wait to see them all quilted and bound  ;)   The Grand Prize winners will be announced on May 27th at the end of the amazing parade filled with all of your beautiful quilts.!!!  I can't wait!!!

Grad 2020 Masks!!!

13 of the Youth in my Church are graduating from High School this year.  I figured they needed custom masks for the occasion made of course, in their school colors!!!   I used this free Face Mask pattern from the Fat Quarter Shop and added the applique before sewing the two pieces together.  Didn't they just turn out so cute!!!  Even if they never wear them, I thought they would just be great to hang next to their diploma or with their tassel just as a reminder that they graduated in Quarantine :)

So here is some of the tidbits I learned along the way, just in case you want to make a special applique mask for someone special ;)   And if you have never done Applique before, I have a Video Tutorial here that will walk you though it step by step.  It's super easy!!!   So, first off, I put Heat N Bond Lite on the back of a large piece of material and then from that cut out all my applique letters.  I was planning to use my Alphabet GO! Die, but the letters were to large,  so I went old school and used my Slice Cutter.  It isn't near as fast, (took me 1 1/2 hours to cut out all these letters) but it still beats cutting them out by hand ;)

From there just press them onto one of your rectangles.   You can secure stitch them so they hold on better, but I was making 13 and didn't have the time to secure stitch them all.   So I am just counting on the Heat N Bond ;)   And something to help that out, when you go to pleat the masks, only press the edges, and not over top of the applique letters.  That just made them want to come loose.

Which occasionally, they are still going to do.   Nothing like a glue stick to solve that problem ;)  For those pieces of applique that had an edge or two popping up, I just put a little glue stick on the back and pressed in place with my finger :)  Good as new!!!

And that was about it.  The rest is just basically following the pattern ;)  I used the large size as I wanted plenty of room for the lettering.  I can't wait to give the Graduates these.  We are having a Graduation Drive By Celebration on Tuesday and these will be in the graduates gift baskests.  Should be an awesome day!!!   I love that we can still celebrate the big accomplishments, we just have to think outside the box of how to do it ;)

I hope you are all having a very Happy Quilting Weekend!!!   And if I don't have time to get on by tomorrow, here is wishing you all you amazing women a very  . . .

Tutorial Throwback Thursday - Lots of Love Mini

With Mother's Day coming up on Sunday, I figured today's Tutorial Throwback Thursday, needed to be all about mom.   And what better for mom then the Lots of Love Mini!!!  This is a fun tutorial that walks you through how to make heart blocks and then shares them in all different sizes, so you can truly customize your mini for you and yours ;)

I made this Lots of Love Mini for Barbara.   The Big hearts on the top represent her and her sweetheart Bob.  Then the medium hearts are her children and daughter and sons in-law.  And finally, the small hearts are all of the grand kids.  Isn't that so fun!!! What a wonderful way to say I Love You to Mom , a mini that represents everyone she loves :)

And this Lots of Love Mini post came about from my Splendid Sampler Lot of Love Block, that represents my Sweetheart and my 5 children.   The pattern for the block is found in the book, but I walk you through the steps of making the hearts in the tutorial, and then as you surf down to the mini part, it has the cutting directions for all the different size hearts.   So you can just customize your mini for you ;)

And then just quilt and bind your Lots of Love Mini.  I love this crosshatching quilting, and it goes nice and fast because you are working on a mini.   I love that I can do more detailed quilting on a mini as it won't take me forever ;)     And because this is a mini, you could even get it whipped up before Sunday!!!

And now this Lots of Love Mini is on Barbara's sewing wall and was the start of her Mini collection.    And I hope you want to make one too!!!   I hope you have enjoyed today's Tutorial Throwback Thursday as much as I have!!!      So if you  want to make a Lots of Love Mini  simply click on any of the project name links for the free step by step tutorial.  And when you are done,  I would love to see your Mini's!!  You can email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com, post it to social media with #happyquiltingwithmc  :)   I can't wait to see your Lots of Love Mini quilts!!!

Thanks for popping in today!!!   I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!!
