This was my previous ruler storage. Everything just stacked in the drawer. It was driving me nuts. Whenever I needed my 2 1/2" ruler I had to pretty much pull everything out because it has inevitably fallen to the bottom of the drawer. Guess that is what happens when you start accumulating 40+ rulers. Good times!!!
And within an hour, this was my ruler storage remake!!! Jacob just cut up an old pair of flip flops and drilled a hole through the middle of them to make "thick washers". They because the mount between the wall and the board, making it perfect to just screw them into the studs and still leaving enough room to get the hooks into the board. I just love it and you better believe I am kicking myself for waiting so long to do this!!! It was so easy and now it just feels so organized and that just inspires me to create all the more ;)
And that drawer . . . Well, you can certainly find things in it now. I had a few rulers that didn't have holes in them, but I know they have those cute little wire baskets that you can hang on a peg board so that will be the solution for those rulers and then the drawer will be even more tidy. Yippee!!!
So ya, if you can't tell, I am pretty happy with my storage Ruler Remake!!!! Now to pulling some of those rulers down and starting some new Works in Progress :) But first, it's July 24th here in Utah, meaning it's Pioneer Day and I have a Main Street Mile to run and then a parade to enjoy with the kiddos ;)
Happy Monday All!!!!
I'm inspired! Another honey-do chore coming up.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! That must feel wonderful :-) It looks great! Great tip for using the flip flops. I'll have to tell my hubby about that.
ReplyDeleteYour sweetheart deserves a big hug! I'll hug him too, if he'd make one for me! My rulers and templates are stacked in a basket, but finding the ONE I need is such a drain on my creativity. Great look and now a great looking drawer too! Enjoy the run and parade, Melissa!
ReplyDeleteI love it. I'm working on trying to organize my crafty space.
ReplyDeleteI recently did the same and it's amazing! I cut so much faster now with the tools right there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great solution and great hubby! I'm a beginner, so only have 3 rulers. I'm constantly being tempted by rulers on blogs that make cutting and piecing so much easier. Would you mind recommending a few that you think really are "must haves"? And a run in Utah in July! This Mainer almost melted on a trip to Utah in July--even though it was the most amazingly beautiful place I've ever been!
ReplyDeleteI use the 3M stick on hangers for my rulers. I don't have the luxury of being able to do a pegboard, so using the removable stick-on hangers is a lovely solution.
DeleteYay! I hope Jacob doesn't mind if I use his genius flip flop idea!
ReplyDeleteMuch better :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I will beating up pegboard if I get a sewing room--I may even paint it to match the wall. Great suggestion about the wire baskets!
ReplyDeleteNext up: your cutting surface! It looks like it's on top of a desk? Isn't that too low? It would definitely be too low for me. But perhaps you're a very short person? I think cutting tables, like ironing boards, are generally most comfortable if they are kitchen counter height. I think that's about 36-37" And a regular desk or any other table made for you to sit down at, like a dining room table, is much lower than that. As a result, if you have to stand at it and cut or iron, your back will end up hurting. Unless, again, you are a fairly short person.
ReplyDeleteOkay kiddo - big thumbs up for the peg board - now let's see the REST of the room!! Believe it or not, I'm a bit envious of someone who has wall space! My current sewing space only has a half of one wall to hang anything on and everything else is either windows or glass doors!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! I'm in the middle of some sewing room re-organization myself.
ReplyDeletegreat idea, and I love the use of the old flip flop! Hugs, H
ReplyDeleteThat is such an improvement! I am so jealous because I don't have the space to do that. I am sewing on my little dining room/kitchen table with everything spread out on it. But I am grateful I at least have that, and an old sewing machine that seems to be working pretty good.
ReplyDeleteNice job!! I love when everything has a place.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. I like that it is right there, so you do not have to walk across or reach behind or underneath....
ReplyDeleteI have a rack for rulers I am using right now, and then 3M hooks all around my table, which is in the middle of the room. My area is nice and tight, so I can reach behind and grab the rotary cutter if for some nutty reason it is on the ironing table. Your hubbs is a good helper.
I am taking care of daddy every day (93 yo) and this morning my hubbs took my dad (so hot outside here in No Va) to the doctor for the echocardiogram.
Boy, that made me happy. I got to stay home and clean 3 bethrooms😬😀
Have a fun week Melissa
Lucky you! A large desk drawer stores mine. Thankfully, I don't have many.
ReplyDeleteFabulous ruler rack, and I really liked that you shared about the flip flop washer! We made my pegboard rack many years ago and put a 1x2 frame all around the back to push it out from the wall. Your idea would have been much quicker, LOL
ReplyDeleteNice! I've been thinking about making something like this for my new space. Right now, they just sort of sit on a shelf!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome! I had no way to hang the peg board, so I opted to use those Command hooks and put all my rulers on the door to my water heater closet. They are out of the way and accessible, but not as easily gotten to like yours!
ReplyDeleteThanks Claudia, I, too, have not way to hang a peg board, but your idea of using Command Hooks is perfect for me. I have wall space available in my sewing area (kitchen/dinning room) and I have some Command Hooks. I will definitely use this idea to get my rulers in order. Melissa, thanks for this ruler storage post. I love your sewing area.
DeleteLooking good. If your S.H. is clever enough to put up a peg board then can't it be possible for him to drill a hole (in the right place) into a ruler? I've drilled a hole through plastic and a mirror tile - use the right drill bit, slow speed and masking tape - prepare before and it should be ok :) (but do a test first)
ReplyDeleteFor rulers without holes, I clip on a tiny binder clip (you can find them in pretty colors). Flip one of the metail tail ends down, onto the ruler, and leave the other one standing up. That little tail lets you hang it onto a peg.
