So today's post truly is about keeping it real. You might recall
back here that I recently cut out a new quilt design using
Amy Smart's adorable new
Sunnyside Ave fabric. Well, today as I went to start sewing with it, I had the horrible realization that I had cut all 192 of my squares 1/4" short!!! What, how in the world did I do that??? I went back and realized where I had made my mistake in a calculation. Of course, I have made that same calculation countless times before with no problems but somehow this one went amiss. All you can do is move on right :) Luckily, I have extra of the prints, but sadly, I am such a neat freak that I had already folded them back up and stashed them away. Now I will have to press them all again before I can cut.
So I thought, I will press later tonight and move onto another part of the block that is cut correctly. Ya, not so much. I must have been way to distracted when doing the math of this particular design, because my little white kisses squares, ya, they are also 1/4" short!!! And wouldn't ya know, I don't have enough to cut all of them in the right size. Luckily,
Fat Quarter Shop has a little of it in stock and fast shipping. And I admit it, I might have added a few other things in my cart, just to cheer myself up ;)
So it looks like I need to find something new to work on today.
I hope you are all having a Happy Quilting Day with hopefully more forward progress than mine ; )
Wow! What a bummer! Hopefully these can be used in another project.
ReplyDeleteThis is SO me! I've done that before, but usually end up not having enough of anything to make the project work. So, I have to re-order and find something else to do with the, now, "scraps."
ReplyDeleteOh man, have I done that before! Although rather than cut more out, I am more likely to make everything 1/4 inch smaller. Especially since the white was already so accommodating.
ReplyDeleteDoh! Just think how far ahead you are now . . . on a new project!
ReplyDeleteCut them in half again both ways and make a lot of 4 or 9 patch blocks then cut the white to fit as an alternate block. If you don't like the top donate to charity. You can also use the wrong cuts for a piano key border on the correct quilt and cut the white for cornerstones.
ReplyDeleteOh - I feel your pain and disappointment! So glad that you had or could get more of everything - and some bonus items along with it - that would have cheered me up too :)!
ReplyDeleteWhat will this pieces become? Happy Creating?
ReplyDeleteWhoops! You've got a leader/ender project ready to go there!
ReplyDeleteIve done that too. So diappointing.
ReplyDeleteso frustrating!!!
ReplyDeleteAwwww, Maaannnnnn! I would’ve been spouting some big-time no-no words!!
ReplyDeleteWhat will you do with those beautiful miscuts??
Thanks for keeping it real! Sometimes we see all this beautifulness on IG or the internet and forget that there are real people who work really hard to make it happen. And now you have a new project to work on that is already pre-cut without needing to buy pre-cuts! The fabric is just delightful! Feel free to send the mis-cuts my way if you don't know what to do with them but I suspect you already have plans!
ReplyDeleteI think I would do what someone else suggested...just do the pattern 1/4 inch smaller on each piece...maybe there is a surprise for you at the end. I am terrifed of this kind of error... it is not much of a time saver if you do all the same steps and then find out later that they were all wrong. I did a mug rug a few months ago, following the cutting directions without really understanding where it was going, and only after cutting and then going on to the next set of instructions did I discover that the cutting directions were wrong. The last couple things I have made, I have actually made a test block from different fabric before commiting to cutting up the project fabric. I suppose these are ways we learn, darn it!
ReplyDeleteoh my: horrors!! I do that way too much!! :-) I've gotten where I do the old carpenters' rule: Measure twice, cut once! Hmm, you'll just have to figure out a new quilt using the "new" sizes so you won't have to trim them down to something else!! Have a great weekend!! Hugs, H
ReplyDeleteGlad it happens to other quilters too. Could you just make the pattern smaller?
ReplyDeleteSorry about you having to buy more fabric, lol.
If they are all the same size and the pattern is straightforward enough, couldn’t you still use them?
ReplyDeleteI was just going to question exactly what KaHolly questioned. Since the pieces are all cut the same amount too small, wouldn't they still work? I've done the same thing at a class, and the instructor said "As long as they are all cut wrong the same amount, you can still use them!" I did, and it worked out fine, altho' a sl. smaller version of the original! Don't dispare, try it! Good luck! : )
ReplyDeleteBeen there, done that. I'm sure you'll make it work.
