ReplyDeleteFamily Fun Night in elementary school. It was an indoor "carnival" with different games. One was a "Cake" walk, where you walked around a circle of numbers until a song was over, then they pulled a number from the box. If you were standing on the number you won a cake from a local bakery. Another game you could win a goldfish. It was so much fun!

ReplyDeleteMy mother was a published poet. On my first day of kindergarten - many decades ago - I came home excited (Mom and Dad had played up how much fun starting school was going to be). That afternoon, Mom and I sat down and she captured my first day in a poem. I wish I knew what happened to that poem. Unfortunately, Mom is no longer with us, so I can't ask her.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite school memory was from High School. I was in a Creative Writing class and one of our assignments was to write a story book for a 5th grader that we were assigned to. My illustrations were pretty awful, but I remember all the students in my class being so excited to get to go to recess again. This was late fall and it was pretty cold outside. I remember all the high school students just standing there shivering like crazy while all the elementary school kids were playing around. It was loads of fun though. amanda.c09 at hotmail.com

My favorite school memory is also my younger brother's most memorable school memory. On my first day of 5th grade, my brother had his first day of Kindergarten at the same school. He was so excited about school and wanted to follow all the directions just right. About halfway through the day, the principal came to my classroom to call me out into the corridor. She was very agitated. My little brother decided after lunch that it was time to go home for a nap because the teacher had told him they always had a rest break after lunch. But he wanted to nap at home rather than with the other students. Sooooo, he climbed a 6 -foot chain link fence and ran home. (The fence surrounded the Kindergarten playground where they had eaten their lunches outside.) My brother hadn't told the teacher he was leaving or where he was going; because, LOL, if he had, she surely would have stopped him. So the principal was frantically worried about where a new Kindergarten student would have gone after he climbed the fence and ran away. Several students had seen him leave and they had told the principal he didn't seem upset, just in a hurry. LOL! I guessed right away where he would go because I had spent the summer showing him the route to take to walk home from school by himself if it was ever necessary and I wasn't available; not knowing he would think it was necessary on that very first day. LOL! So I ran home and found him asleep in his bed. My mom had no idea he'd simply walked in the front door quietly and gone to take a nap like the teacher told him to do. I woke him up and explained that school wasn't over, we needed to go back; which we did together. He was so worried that the teacher would be upset with him; when he thought he was simply following directions. Boy, was that teacher embarrassed when I took him back and so happy that he was safe. Instead of scolding him, she gave him a big hug and burst into tears. And the principal was very grateful too. She patted him on the head repeatedly and thanked me for doing such a great job teaching him his correct route between home and school. Then we both went back to class to finish what was left of our school day. -- Our whole family laughed about it later; but when I think back on it now, as an adult, mostly I am just so very grateful that he knew the route and didn't get lost or kidnapped along his way. I was also so glad that I'd taught him his address and phone number in case something bad ever happened and he needed assistance to get back to his family. (I did the same thing with my own daughter years later; although luckily, she never broke out of school without permission.) The Lord blessed us that day, and we always kid him about it now. He finds it as funny as we do. He always points out that he was simply trying to follow instructions. He just didn't understand why the fence made that goal more difficult than necessary. What a great memory. :)

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite memories of school is a collective one, day after day, year after year: riding the bus. I loved our bus drivers, who were our friends and were interested in each kid and who watched out for us. I loved the camaraderie of being on the bus with my friends in the early morning and at end of the day. I remember days when someone was sad and we would rally round them, or days when we would all sing songs and the happiness was almost palpable and I would hate to get off the bus because we were having so much fun. It was time together with my friends, overseen by kind adults, and those are happy memories.
