The rows actually sew together like this, and I have to say, it was so hard to cut off the sides of those scrappy hexagons. But I so didn't want to bind all of those angles, so off they came.
And I had this Quilt Top. Only now, I am wondering how I want to finish it. Originally I planned to just leave it like this and bind it. Only, what color would I bind it in. I think either red or pink will get lost in all of that scrappy goodness.
So then I started to think, should I add a border to give it a little restful place for the eye. I found this red gingham print in my stash that I thought would work perfect for the binding, if it was next to a little white. So I thought maybe this pink polka dot print for a border??
But then I wondered, maybe something that wasn't red or pink. Like this fun gold metallic print. Does that give it a little more interest??
And then I wondered, maybe something that has red and pink in it. Would that tie it all together more. I love the colors but is the floral to busy for an already busy quilt?
I want to finish this up just right and I am not sure how that is. What do you think?? Leave it without a border and just use a bold binding?? Or add a border for a rest, and if so, which border, pink polka dot, gold polka dot, or floral??? Help a girl out here and leave a comment on which you would choose ;)
Regardless how I choose though . . . I have to say that I am just so excited to see all of those wonderfully scrappy hexagons come together in such a wonderfully scrapilicous quilt top!!! It's just so fun!!!
I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Weekend!!!
From your choices, I'd do the gold polka dot border. If it was mine, I would just bind it in something close to the darkest red in your quilt and call it done.
ReplyDeleteI love the first option with the polka dots! I agree with you -- its hard to trim quilts that have non-square blocks but I definitely don't want to bind all those angles either!
ReplyDeleteFrom your choices, I would pick the polka dot, however, if it were mine, and I love this, I would go with a solid gray or maroon, or even a chestnut.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't put a border on it. And I'd choose a really dark red to bind it. I also like Susan's suggestion of a gray, but make sure it's a dark one.
ReplyDeleteI say no border! It is perfect the way it is. I would use a dark pink or dark red to bind it - it will certainly show up just fine, esp. on the edges that are light-colored.
ReplyDeleteTo me, your polka dots seem too bright white, compared to the neighboring prints. Of your three choices I like the middle one best and I would find that darkest red to use for binding. I like Susan's ideas too. And perhaps Emily is right with the idea of no border.
ReplyDeleteI love the pink polka dot. I might also play with incorporating those left over scraps into some cornerstones. It's lovely whichever way you decide!

ReplyDeleteNo border for me. A dark blue or grey as a binding would be great, I think.
ReplyDeleteWow, your quilt is stunning! I don't know for the border (or not), the floral is too busy as you said. Maybe a plain color? Susan's suggestion for grey or chesnut is a great idea to me, but choice is yours ;)
ReplyDeleteMy first choice would be no border at all and a plain red binding. But, if you want it large then I would use the pink poke a dot border.
ReplyDeleteBefore reading the comments, I thought about it, and thought I wouldnt add any borders and do a dark red binding. And it looks like others thought the same thing! Beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteThanks for asking. I would choose no border and a solid colour binding in one of your pink or red shades.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with no border and the red binding. Wonderful scrappy quilt!
ReplyDeleteIsI say no border and I might play with the little floral print for the bonding. Your quilt is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI like the gold metallic print border.
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the quilt without a border. A dark read binding would finish it off nicely.
ReplyDeleteIf it were my quilt, I wouldn't put a border on it; I wouldn't want anything to draw attention away from those blocks. But if you are choosing between the border options, I would skip the florals. I love the metallics but I think the scale may be too small or too crowded. So I'd go with the pink polka dots...but I still think you should let the blocks speak (joyfully) for themselves.
ReplyDeleteThe pink polkadot
ReplyDeleteI'd say no border and continue the scrappy goodness with a scrappy pink & red binding! Great quilt though! Awesome! Nice job!
ReplyDeleteNo Border needed!!!! just finish as it is and it will look great.
ReplyDeleteEither no border, or the pink polkadot! My husband feels no quilt is complete until it has a border, while I've gotten used to the "new" look of no borders. I love them both!
ReplyDeleteStunning , congrats on a near finish. Love the colours.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about the border but your quilt top is so very pretty!! Have a wonderful day!!
ReplyDeleteIt's perfect without the border. Love the pink polka dots for binding, but they might be too big. Maybe dark red?
ReplyDeleteIt's a gorgeous quilt! I would probably do the pink polka dots for the border............but that's just me and I need a place for my eyes to rest. However you choose to finish it it is going to be spectacular! Good luck in making your decision. Nadine W. rnwillis@velotech.net
ReplyDeleteI'd bind it in black with no borders. It's a great quilt!
ReplyDeleteIf it was mine I would not do a border. I would bind it in black. Black will frame it well and the piecing will shine.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. It will be lovely however you decide to finish it. (having said that, I prefer the first 2 options over the floral) That's the fun of quilting, you can make it which ever way YOU like :))
ReplyDeleteI would consider not using a border and binding it with scrappy red/pink so it would blend with the piecing and distract from the beauty of the string blocks.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't do a border and just do a dark solid binding. But if you must do a border, I wouldn't do one of the lighter colors... I think you need something darker to make the eye want to stare at all the action in the quilt - like looking down a well. If you use a light border I think it makes the eye want to look away because everything is too blinding like looking at the sun.
ReplyDeleteLike the gold metallic. I would do a dark red border if it was mine, but your not me and I. Love your little quilt
ReplyDeleteAwesome quilt top!!! My choice, no border and I'd use the polka dot for the binding.
ReplyDeleteI would not add a border. How about facing instead of binding it?
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt top! I would never have imagined the Petite Point Quilt Pattern could look that modern! I would either do no border or the red check as a border and then the saturated dark red as the binding. Thank you for sharing, you inspire!
ReplyDeleteI like the gold polka dot for a border.
ReplyDeleteTo my eye no border and a dark red or black for binding. Love this.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! I looked up the pattern you used and it looks NOTHING like your quilt. I had to triple check. It’s all in the fabric choices, isn’t it? That’s what makes quilting an art.
ReplyDeleteNo border! I would choose a dark red binding or a deep turquoise blue for a real contrast pop. Beautiful quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific quilt top! I think if you have to put on a border, the polka dots are nice, but I really like it without the border. What a sweet quilt this will be!
