She Can Hear!!!

Let's start with a bit of back story.  Since our sweet little Jocelyn was born she has not been able to pass a hearing test.  She really doesn't respond much to loud noises (which, with 4 siblings who tend to get loud, can actually be quite nice during nap time.)  We have been going through the process of testing, monitoring, and waiting for her to grow.  She has had liquid junk in her middle ear which has blocked the ability for sound to travel to her inner ear.  There were times we thought it was clearing on it's own, but just as soon as we were hopeful, it would get all blocked again.

So . . . At her 9 month follow-up and failure of another auditory test on Tuesday, and checking-up with the ENT on Wednesday, it was decided that she needs tubes put in her ears on Thursday!!    So . . . bright and early Thursday morning we arrived at the hospital. Now I know this is a totally routine surgery, (our second had it done at 9M for ear infections) and that the physician's will do a wonderful job, and that Josie would do great, but I still couldn't help but get nervous.  I guess that is just part of being a mom, we worry!!!

Jocelyn got to wear a cute little gown with tiger's on it. Isn't she cute!! She was a pro waiting for the surgery.  She just played with her toys and examined her new surroundings.  I was quite impressed considering she should have been super hungry.  She is such a good little girl.

Her new favorite toy arrived in the form of a monitor.  This one was hard to keep out of her mouth :)  She liked that the part on her toe kept glowing red.   . . .   And before you knew it she was headed back for surgery.

I didn't take anymore pictures as she came back feeling pretty lousy trying to shake off the anesthesia.  We took her home and after a bottle and a nap she was back to her happy self . . . with one slight change.  When I hollered down the stairs for the kids to come up for lunch (I am to lazy to walk down them) I was shocked that Josie started crying behind me.  I had startled her with my hollering.   This has never happened before.   And then a few minutes later, when my son let out a Hooray for Mac and Cheese shout, she startled again and began to cry.

Those tears are such a blessing!!!  She can hear.  I am just so happy for her.  What a wonderful ending to a nerve-racking 9 months.  We started out fearing she was deaf, to hoping she would be able to hear with hearing aids, to perfect hearing (I hope, we have to follow up in a few weeks) with the aid of tubes.  I am just overjoyed.  Now the kids and I just have to work on keeping our voices down.  I can't imagine how it must be to go from a soundless/muffled world to a noisy and loud world. But, I can say, I am so happy that we will be going through the transition!!

  3. ohhh fantastic news, my DS was slightly deaf but didn't get his tubes until 18 months now he's lost 10-15% hearing in both ears :(
my dad also hasn't realised he's got bad hearing loss and was scared to hear the birds flying, hadn't heard them in years...
she'll have to learn the sounds now

  4. I am so glad to read this. Being deaf isn't an easy life in a hearing world. I should know. I was born severely and profoundly deaf. My only worry is that 9 months is a long time to go without hearing any sound. But, I am sure she will be absolutely fine. :-)

  12. You've got me crying - how wonderful for your little girl to be able to hear. She'll soon get used to the noises - she'll adapt faster than you guys adapting to being quieter!!

  19. That is wonderful news! I wear hearing aids myself (I have a minor hearing loss), so when my twin boys were born I was super nervous about their hearing. They are six months old now and have been tested twice - passed with flying colors each time. It has been SUCH a relief. I'm so sorry you had to go through all the stress, but so happy Jocelyn is going to be fine!

  25. Melissa,
I am so happy for you and Jocelyn. This post brought tears to my eyes and I said a quick prayer to thank God for this miracle for that beautiful little angel. I felt bad that she was startled, bless her heart. I can just hear you saying OK everyone, for the next couple days, SHHHHHHHH.
    Hugs,
    Julie

  26. We had almost the exact same experience! Miss Darling got tubes at 19 months because she had no words at all! (But she passed all her hearing tests just fine!) As soon as the tubes went in, she was sensitive to noise, and started talking - and hasn't stopped! (She's 8 now!) And isn't it amazing how fast the tubes surgery is - I think she was out of my sight for about 10 minutes! Congrats and I hope things continue to improve for you!

  30. Yay Melissa! I'm a speech pathologist so I know how a myringotomy and PE tubes can make a huge change in the life of a child. I actually had the same surgery when I was 5 and my son had it when he was 2. I will say, she may react to some loud sounds like the vacuum or toilet flushing, but those are the ones you should probably expose her to a bit more now just so she gets used to them.

  31. Praise the Lord. Im in tears for you all. God has blessed your little girl and your whole family. This is a fantastic transition.

  60. That is wonderful news. Her hearing is probably super sensitive right now. My daughter has some hearing loss in both ears and at 32 years of age she is still very sensitive to some sounds. Hearing aids won't help her but she does great at reading lips.

  70. Great news!! She will be in for a shock now that she will be able to hear the world, LOL! Give her a squeeze for me!! I had tube put in my ears when I was 8. It was scary. At least she won't remember this.

  71. Great news!! I was 10 when they put tubes in my ears. Who knew that birds could sing so loud or that toilets flushing was a deafening sound of rushing water? The gift of hearing is a joy. She will adjust. =)

  72. What wonderful news! Your story brought tears to my eyes. Although I don't have children of my own, I've been a nanny for 14 years and they are like my own. :) It's amazing how those little things (like singing to them) mean so very much. What a blessing to watch her as she is hearing things for the first time. So very happy for you all!

  73. That is so fantastic Melissa!! How upsetting the past months must of been for you. I'm so glad the surgery went well and your little one is hearing now. My little guy had some routine surgery too a few weeks ago. So I know how that stressing goes... glad all is well with yours.

  74. Bummer! LOL, just kidding...I am a sign language teacher and interpreter and hard of hearing myself and love Deaf culture and believe it or not we celebrate when we get a Deaf baby! I hope it is easy for her to develop language now, but if not start signing as soon as possible because the "disability" in being Deaf is really that no one is fluent in sign around the Deaf person which leads to them not developing language properly. If you should ever need to know more I am happy to share what I know, but I am glad since you guys are hearing that she seems to be too! :)

  75. Oh, what a blessing!! Did they say if the think this will be a reoccurring fluid build up? I ask because a little guy I watch is three (almost 4) and on his second set of tubes because he constantly has a build up of fluid in there. I pray she continues to do well (and quickly adjusts to the new noises and can get back to a better nap time! LOL)
