Trimming

I am working on another little project that I am hoping to be able to share soon.  But I am just wondering, does anyone else just get a huge smile over a pile of trimmings.  I don't know why, but I just love to see a stack of shavings and all the colors popping from them :)

  1. It makes me think of "rag dolls". I always wonder if that is what they were filled with.

  2. I love seeing them too! The only thing is - I feel bad about throwing them away. I've been trying to think of ways I could use them but i haven't come up with much. Any ideas? About the only thing i've thought of is to maybe tie them around some string or a string of lights to make a fun garland, braid/tie them together to make a ribbon for wrapping the quilt/present, etc. What do you do with your trimmings and tiny pieces?

    1. Hi AshleySaxon, one of the members from my quilt guild uses the trimmings as stuffing for dog and cat beds that she donates to our local animal shelter. She makes a very simple bed, leaves an opening, and then keeps it by her work area where she sews. She stuffs the bed as she goes. Just an idea! :)

  3. Just finished another quilt top and when I was cleaning up afterwards, I took all the leftover bits and pieces and cut them into squares, bricks and strips for the appropriate width size shoeboxes and tossed away the little trimmings like yours! It is so easy then to pull the already cut pieces when I want to make another scrappy quilt! Love to see the waste bits those little teeny trimmings!

  4. Honestly.... I really hate trimming so it's only good in that the pile of blocks to be trimmed is getting smaller!

  7. Great idea CathyK - to have a dog bed all sewed up and then just stuff the scraps into it.

  11. Mine all go in a mini bin on my worktop, so I get loads of colours building up, I'm always sad to empty it!

  13. I laughed at your post today Melissa. I posted awhile back about scraps and the little trimmings. They always remind me of birds nests and I think I will do something with them to make a nest. See mine here. http://www.springleafstudios.com/2013/06/scraps-scraps-scraps.html

  15. I improperly cut 400 Dresden plates and just finished trimming each side down by 1/4 inch. The plates were Kaffee Fassett fabrics and as we all know, that means bright colors. I dumped the trimmings in a large canning jar on my sewing table. It looks so nice and makes me happy.

  17. That pile of trimmings shows that the sewing is really under way, the trimmings then are used as stuffing for kneeler pads formy gardening pals.

  19. I save the trimmings all year long. Then in the spring a put them outside in the bushes and hedges etc. for the birds to use in their nest making.

  20. I take trimmings, gold and silver thread, some irradescent grass
buy glass ornament balls (clear) and push all that into a ball
and add a festive ribbons on the hanger, add a tree ornament hanger and you have a gift or a ornament for your own tree.

  25. They are perfect for animal beds. Any small scraps, cottons, and flannel, no batting though. smaller the better! The animal shelters love them. They re-wash them a couple of times before they get too grungy. The cats/dogs love them because they smell like people (and quilters are the best smelling people there are right? lol) If you are throwing your scraps out, please consider making an animal bed. A bag half the size of a pillow case is good for a cat and a pillow case size for a dog. When we have retreat or workshops, we all save our "bits" for the animal beds!! Recycle-reuse-repurpose; provide an animal bed!!
