Back To Basics Progress

I have decided to call my Riley Blake Challenge Quilt Back to Basics.  WIth this many Flying Geese and HST's it just seemed to fit :)  That was a lot of trimming, luckily I had my Bloc-Loc rulers to help :)

It didn't take long to turn the basic quilting blocks into blocks and the blocks into a quilt top.  It was one of those projects where you are just so excited to see how it will turn out you can't stop until it is done.   I just love how the secondary designs pop out of it.  So fun!!!  And now I just need to wait for Abby to come back from her annual cleaning so that I can get it quilted.

I am debating between two plans for quilting:
1 - Either a  circle that starts in the slightly off center and keeps moving out.  I love this quilting design everytime I see it and have wanted to give it a try for some time.  I think it might also add some softness to all those points.
2 - Stitching in the ditch around the "windmill" designs to highlight the secondary designs.

Which one do you think I should go with??  It's a toss up for me so your help is greatly appreciated :)

Linking up to Lee's :)

  2. Your quilt turned out great! So neat to see it go from shapes on a computer to an actual product :) Visiting from WIP Wednesday, but also a regular reader.

  3. Nice quilt! I'd go for the circular design. To me it would soften all those sharp points and angles.

  4. Lovely top...I don't know about the quilting...I think both sound nice...I'm sure you'll get some better opinions as the day goes on.

  6. Or go for several smaller quilting circles. Looking good!
Q: I'm looking for a good med-dark grey for my next quilt. What is the grey print that looks like straight-line sketching or tv static? It's right underneath the yellow dot in the flying geese stack.

  7. Boy - that is a toss up -- but I think personally I would go with an orange peel type of quilting on all those beautiful angles. Can't WAIT to see what you do -- I'm sure it will be beautiful!

  8. Love this! I would go with the off-center circle. I think that would look amazing!

  9. I vote for the circle stitching. I have seen it before and I think it is so interesting.

  10. You can make the off center quilt next time. Your top now is lovely and would be outstanding with windmill
    quilting.

  11. Great job, Melissa!! I think I would do the circular design. I personally like that look on quilts that contain a lot of points.

  13. Love it! I like the idea of circular quilting. Breaks up the lines and gives it more depth.

  14. Oooooo fabulous! I love windmill anything, so that is my pick!

  15. The geese are great in these wonderful fabrics. I thing the circular quilting will look great with all these wonderful triangles.

  16. I'm in the minority here but I think you should do the windmill quilting. I worry that the circle might take away from the secondary design.

  17. this is very pretty. I like the idea of the circular top stitching. That would be very pretty.

  18. Wow! this is looking awesome! Great design with such basic blocks.

Love the first idea for quilting, off centered circles. Can't wait to see what u decide.

  19. I love your quilt! My brain will not let me see the windmill design so I would suggest highlighting it with you quilting if you want it to stand out--just in case there are other brains out there like mine out there.
I do love the circle idea though. I usually find it hard to decide on a quilting design so I generally go with something I love or something that my gut tells me is best.

  20. This is a great use of the challenge fabrics! I love concentric circles and have a tute for quilting them in my flickr sets. It would look great on this quilt!

  21. Tough question to answer! I love the idea of a circular quilting design on such angular blocks, but I also have a hard time picking out the "windmill" designs so quilting them to highlight them would be a real good idea IF you want them highlighted.
I know, I'm no help at all. I just managed to locate the free motion foot for my machine in the tin that I keep all my hand quilting supplies in, and still trying to figure out just what I was thinking when I pulled that stunt!

  22. This quilt is outstanding. I love your use of color scheme and layout. Beautiful job. My favorite quilting always surprises me and is something I never would have thought to choose, so I'm not giving any advice there. :-D
This is going to be amazing regardless of the quilting.

  25. I am a huge fan of circle quilting. I think it would look great and enhance the movement of the points around the quilt.

  26. I love that quilt very much! If it was me, I would go with circle quilting. I love circle quilting, but have yet to try it!

  27. I love it - especially the pops of black. My vote is for the curving spiral. I like it when geometric quilts include soft curvy quilting - it's a nice contrast.

But no matter how you quilt it, it will look fantastic!

  28. You always do such fun designs. I struggle with figuring out how to quilt my quilts. I'm sure whatever you decide will be wonderful.
