Last week, my family and I were in Canada to spend time with extended family and to celebrate my Grandmother's 85th birthday. (more on this coming soon) We got home late last night, and even though I was exhausted from traveling all day and just wanted to go to sleep, a squishy package had to be opened first!! Oh ya, my blocks from the Log Cabin Swap had arrived while I was out of town!!!! So excited!!!
So, even though I should be unpacking this morning and maybe starting the mountain of laundry from the week away, and oh ya, there is that school shopping that I really should get done . . . And yes, I decided all that could wait because I had some log cabin layout playing to do!! And oh it was so fun, but now my problem is, I can't decide which layout to go with. There are so many awesome options and I love them all!!!!! Here is what I am trying to decide between . . .
1 - Traditional Log Cabin Layout - Always a Classic
2 - Zig-Zag Layout - Lots of fun with lots of movement.
3 - Two Bits Layout. I am sure there is an actual name for this, but when I was laying it out I kept repeating, Two Bits In, Two Bits Out, referring to the layout of the square and the name stuck.
4 - Stacked Squares - This one has a super fun 3D effect to it.
5 - Quarter Rows - A slightly more modern look - neat and tidy.
6 - Alternating Quarter Rows - Just a slight variation to the last but adds a lot of movement.
7 - Random - Sometimes it is just fun to plop them down and see what you get.
So ya, I keep going through these images, and I really do love them all for different reasons. I have no idea how I am going to choose.
So do you think you could help a girl out?? Which one is your favorite and why???
And thank you in advance ;)
my two favorites were the traditional and the stacked squares. I liked the traditional because it looked wonky and with all of the different fabrics it seemed to fit. I think the stacked squares was just interesting--something different. Well at least I narrowed it to two!
ReplyDeleteI like Two Bits and Quarter Rows. Two Bits has movement, and Quarter Rows looks the most 3D to me.
ReplyDeleteI like stacked squares the best. Traditional and quarter rows are my runner up choices. I love the blocks.
ReplyDeleteI think Stacked.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are the zig zag and quarter rows. Good luck choosing, it will look great no matter which one you go with.
ReplyDeleteI like two bits most, stacked squares second.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are #5 then #2.
ReplyDelete#1, #2, and #4 are my favorites.
ReplyDelete#2 and #4 are my favorites - love the movement in them!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't look like you're getting much consistency in the responses here. The good thing about that, though, is that apparently you can't go wrong! For my part, I like zig-zag and the quarter rows layouts best. Good luck making your decision!
ReplyDeleteMy two favorites would be the Stacked or the Zig Zag. Lovley blocks and they are so much fun to make!
ReplyDeleteQuarter rows or Traditional - because I'm needing lots of order in my life right now!!
ReplyDeleteI chose 2 layouts; number 2 and number 5. With number 2, I love the way my eyes are constantly traveling trying to find various fabrics it is just fun. With number 5, I really like the depth that it creates and again my eyes were traveling, but this time jus within each block towards the center. Which ever choice you decide upon, this is going to make a wonderful quilt. Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful creative day!
ReplyDelete#4 Stacked Squares! Its the classic with a twist!
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to be much help! They are all great!
ReplyDeleteI have to go with the zig zag layout. You know those crazy ink blot pics where you look at one thing and are supposed to see something else. That's how the zig zag strike me. I can see it. It just pops for me.
ReplyDeleteHave fun making that choice! Better you than me.
Fun blocks! I like the Quarter Rows for the orderly look with movement too. It may even look good with a solid sashing ..
ReplyDeleteI will share a pic of one I did with sashing a couple years ago. For mine, it modernized the vintage fabrics I had used, and I needed to make it bigger! Poor pics, but here is the link! http://redletterquilts.blogspot.com/2013/05/i-got-busy-finally-on-new-quilt-for-my.html
my favorite is the zigzag but really, they are all cute!
ReplyDeleteTwo bits!!! Fun, fun!!!
ReplyDeleteI like the traditional, but I think to give it a modern twist and more movement, I like stacked squares best. All of the layouts look good. So much can be done with the log cabin square.
ReplyDeleteAll are wonderful, but I like the zigzag and the quarter rows. I think it's the 3D effect that I like on those layouts.
ReplyDeleteZig-Zag & Quarter Rows! It's a more organized - random sort of look.
ReplyDeleteHow fun. I like the quarter rows. Its like looking into a bunch of little windows. I also like the movement of Zig-Zag

Make one of each! lol Love them all!
ReplyDeleteI like the stacked squares--visually interesting and modern with a traditional block!
ReplyDeleteI like two bits.
ReplyDeleteI like them all, but I think "6 - Alternating Quarter Rows" is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are zig zag and random. They just pop at me the most. Good luck deciding!
ReplyDeleteI like traditional and quarter rows the best, the others seem a bit chaotic to me. The blocks are really busy already, so I'd keep the layout simple.
ReplyDeleteAnything but the zig-zag! But my favorite is the stacked squares followed by the traditional. Alternating quarter rows is right up there, too.... LOL
ReplyDeleteI like the movement of the zig zag and the wonky feel of the traditional layout. Some of the others are too busy and don't let the eye rest or follow the movement!
ReplyDeleteI like traditional and alternating quarter rows the best!
ReplyDeleteQuarter rows first, stacked second. The squares are very busy and funky in themselves. The bit of order imposed by the quarter squares makes the pattern less overwhelming
ReplyDeleteTraditional, stacked squares, and zigzag, in that order of preference--but only after changing my mind several times!
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteVery special to hear for this grandmother to hear that you went to visit your grandmother for her birthday. I pray that my little grands keep being close to me as they get older.
Anyway, I like ZigZag and Two Bits best. They have movement yet they are settled within themselves, if you know what I mean.
Many blessings during this busy time for you, m & jb (the cat)
I liked stacked squares!! No reason other than i just want to keep looking at it :) i never realised that there are so many different variations with log cabin blocks. They all look great!
ReplyDeleteI liked stacked squares!! No reason other than i just want to keep looking at it :) i never realised that there are so many different variations with log cabin blocks. They all look great!
ReplyDeleteEven though it is called traditional, I think the first layout is really effective. I find it very modern looking, with a different 3D appearance than the stacked squares one. It's very bold, very striking.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is ZigZag, followed by Stacked Squares.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely zig zag is my first choice closely followed by Two bits.
ReplyDeleteGosh...any of them would be great with those awesome blocks.
ReplyDeleteSlightly different twist: I like the zig-zag and the stacked squares best, with the traditional coming in a close #3. I like the movement, and I like the way the different blocks play against each other.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for the quarters, because to me the squares don't seem to interact, so you don't seem to get the benefit of the whole 'swap' activity.
My favorite was Stacked Squares, followed by Two Bits. I really think those give a good balance of movement with order.
ReplyDelete#1. Stacked Squares #2. Traditional! Have fun!! :-)
ReplyDeleteasking me the impossible here, as I saw each one I thought very nice all look eyecatching, best of luck deciding. Must have been a fun time at your grandmother`s birthday do
ReplyDeleteMy initial reaction was the zig zag, but the more I look the more I live them all. Good luck with your decision, but I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them!
ReplyDeleteWow - didn't realize all the options. I do love the Zig-Zag (2) and the Quarter Rows (5) somehow especially, due to the fabric colors used, but I'm looking forward to seeing what you yourself choose in the end!! Have Fun!
ReplyDeleteI liked most of the arrangements, but #4 Stacked Squares was my favourite :)
ReplyDeleteI like the #4 stacked squares with these particular blocks.
ReplyDeleteI initially thought I liked the zig-zag...but then you showed the quarter rows. Love that one. Clean and modern.
ReplyDeleteLove the Zig Zag and don't like the random. Just sayin.
ReplyDeleteI really like the Quarter Rows. It has a modern look and has a 3-d effect also.
ReplyDeleteI can certainly see the problem--all of the suggested layouts are stunning. Choosing one was difficult so I chose two #1 would be the Two Bit layout and #2 is Alternating Quarter Rows. Seeing all the blocks and bloggers involved is inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI'm liking options 3,4,5, or 6. The others seems to be too random and my eyes get tired. At least the the four I like have some sort of organization. Kudos to your Swap mates for providing such fun blocks.
ReplyDeleteLove the Zig-Zag and the quarter rows as those appeal to my sense of symetry. Love all the different colors!
ReplyDelete3. It seems to have something from every other option :-)
ReplyDeleteI like the zig zag layout. There is movement but still calming to look at. I think I want to do a swap like that in my guild.
ReplyDeleteI liked Two Bits Layout but I also like the zig zag
ReplyDeleteI liked zigzags and quarter rows evenly.
ReplyDeleteThey are all great. I like two bits best. Can't wait to see which one you choose :) .
ReplyDeleteI have to say #4 :))
ReplyDeleteStacked or Two Bits. Really...I want them all. What a great swap!
ReplyDeleteThese are all cute, but I really like the Two Bits. It has some of the optical illusion in it, and variety, but it isn't too busy to be distracting. What a great swap. You can't go wrong with any of these.
ReplyDeleteI really couldn't pick a favorite. Loved them all. These blocks were unusual, weren't they? In that they were all equally scrappy, and there was no light or dark side?
ReplyDeleteI like number 4. I love the 3-D effect.
ReplyDeleteWell, not that this going to be helpful...I liked the 1st one.
ReplyDeleteTHESE ARE SO DANG CUTE ..I'D DIE TO HAVE ANY ONE OF THEM..LOVE ALL THE FABRIC COLORS YOU USED.
