Splendid Sampler Saturday :)

So are you following along with The Splendid Sampler??  It is a year long Mystery Quilt Along with two 6" Sampler Blocks released each week ;)  And guess what, the first blocks were released this week!!!  You can find all of the details here, read along the top index for quick reference to everything you need to know :)   It is my hope to try and post my weeks blocks each Saturday.  In fact, I had such a lovely time starting my Saturday today with these super fun sampler blocks, that my plan is to save then for every Saturday Morning so that I can have Splendid Saturday's all year long ;)

My plan is to do Monochromatic Blocks and then put them in an Irish Chain Layout.  I know, you are super surprised with my love for Irish Chain Quilts ;)   So when it is all done, it will look something like this, although I haven't decided on the final size I want it to be, so this could shift a bit, but it gives you the general idea.

I hope to share blocks each Saturday (although, I know I am going to miss some ;)  and am so excited to watch this come together throughout the year . . . I hope you will pop in on Saturday's and share in watching this Splendid Rainbow take shape ;)   And with that . . . Let's get to this weeks blocks.

First off, the Hearts Aflutter Block designed by Pat Sloan.  I used fusible raw edge applique for the center heart and opted for a slightly different design of heart because I could cut this one out with my Slice, so it was super fast ;)  And of course, I didn't notice that little bit of lint on the picture until just now, oh well ;)

And Second, the Wings Block by Jane Davidson.  Those little blocks are 1" finished.  how cute is that!!!  I did free motion quilting for the little antenna on my home machine.  It was super easy and I always love the opportunity to do a little FMQing on my domestic machine since I mostly use the long arm now.  So fun!!!

And those are this weeks blocks!!!  And super fun news . . . Tomorrow I get to share the block I designed for this fun Quilt Along!!!  Be sure to pop in to see the fun story behind it, some tidbits on helping you to make the block, and a super cute bonus mini ;)

  2. I, too, really like your layout idea. I don't know if I will make all of the blocks, but that layout will work with whatever I do finish. Thank you for the suggestion.

  3. Nice layout, I do love a rainbow quilt! I'm enjoying making these blocks. I haven't done much in the way of 6.5" blocks and I'm always up for something new. I used the backbasting method on my heart applique and found it worked quite well if you are looking for some slower stitching. First time I've done needleturn so one new skill acquired already!

  4. That layout concept is super rad. I contemplated stitching along on this but decided, nah, can't really right now. No motivation.
I will definitely be looking forward to Saturdays now, though, just to see your posts about this QAL!

  5. I too have signed up for this challenge but afraid the second block has put me off as the squares are so tiny but am printing them off and maybe will make the ones like this ne as 12" to make life easier!

  9. Wow!! I'm doing the splendid sampler!!! Your version is going to be fantastic! (Kind of wish I'd thought of it actually!) Mine is just suuuper scrappy
I have no colour theme or anything! Just picking whatever takes my fancy at that moment from my scraps (or stash if I HAVE to) I hope it looks OK!! Bit nervous about how it will come together (perfectionist here) but it's sooo freeing to just not worry about it.

    1. I am sure your scrappy one is going to look amazing. I really debated about doing a super scrappy as I need projects every once and a while that are like you say, so freeing :)

  10. It's going to be beautiful Melissa!! But I was wondering, If the blocks finish at 6", what size are the strips in the X blocks you are making? It seems like they might be an odd size. Hugs, H
