My family is deeply entrenched in the "OMG, please don't make me sing, it will be awful" camp. That said, I could play Brahm's Lullaby as soon as I learned where the keys were on the piano. My fingers and ears just knew how that one went. Funny how our very early music memories stick with us.
ReplyDeleteI always sang For Baby (For Bobby) by Peter Paul and Mary. love that song..
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog w/ bloglovn! thanks!
ReplyDeleteWe sang just about anything we could to our kids but the ones they loved the best were the ones their grandmother made up. A hard act to follow! Alexplus4@hotmail.com

ReplyDeleteI am such a bad singer, my children would put their little hand up and cover my mouth, so I would just hum them to sleep. Even now, my little dog acts weird if I sing. At least I can sew and quilt. crystalbluern at tds dot net.

My kids loved to have me sing to them, but I wasn't very good. I found that I could get a melody going with Emmy Lou Harris' version of "The Boxer". To this day it brings back good memories for them, my son even had us dance together to that song at his wedding! The lyrics aren't all that great as a kid's story, but the "lie de lie, lie di lie" were good to sing along to and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I was not gifted with a good singing voice but I do like the lullaby "Hush, Little Baby." I remember that song from the movie, "The Miracle Worker," where Annie Sullivan sings that to Helen Keller.

I loved to sing silly Sunday School songs to my children when they were little, and now to the grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteI really like 'Hush little Baby' but my son's favorite "lullaby" is a song I made up for him that he calls the 'Loud Noise Pumpkin Song' - I have to sing it to him every night before I put him to bed.
ReplyDeleteThere is a descant to You Are My Sunshine that m sister learned that I love to sing along with the traditional melody. Not really a lullaby, but I love to show how much I love them with this one.
ReplyDeleteI follow HQ blog via Feedly. Also follow on Instagram and Pinterest.
ReplyDeleteI don't guess it's really a "lullaby", but I've always sung "I Love You, A Bushel & and Pack" to my grandkids and they just love that one. My Daddy used to sing it to us in the car while we were driving on trips.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is a lullaby but I would sing You are my Sunshine to my granddaughter when we were South for the winter.
ReplyDeleteslowery@shaw.ca
It's unusual, but our babysitter when I was growing up would rock her grandbaby (she kept lots of kids at her house) and sing "At the Cross" to him. I sang it to my children and sing it to my grandbabies now. Also, they loved the old hymn "He Keeps Me Singing." ;)

ReplyDeleteFollow you on pinterest!
ReplyDeleteListening to the Brahms Lullaby is my favourite to listen to and singing any made up ditty about the should be sleeping child is my favourite to sing. This way there is no benchmark on which to evaluate your lack of singing ability.
ReplyDeleteI receive Happy Quilting post via email.
ReplyDeleteMy middle daughter's name is Bonnie...so I used to sing "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean"....now that I have 3 grandbabies that I babysit I just insert their names...first it was "my Rory lies over the ocean"...it always put him right to sleep. Now it's become "my Ronyn lies...". Soon I'll be singing it to baby Ellie. Gotta go...I'm getting sleepy...lol.
ReplyDeleteHush Little Baby is the first thing that came to mind. Not sure if it's because it was sung to me or I've just heard it a million times ;-)
ReplyDeleteI follow you on Blogger and IG
ReplyDeleteI follow you via email...(and love each post)! Thank you for the giveaways...Tuesday has become my favorite day!
ReplyDeleteI think it is lovely to be able to sing lullabies but truth be told my singing is like a cat screeching and in fact it is so bad that if I ever wanted the children to stop fighting in the back of the car all I had to do is threaten to sing and there would be complete silence and harmony immediately.

ReplyDeleteGood old Rock-a-Bye Baby but with the one line changed to "And God will save baby, cradle and all"!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite lullaby is Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) by Billy Joel. There is something about that song that both calms me, yet makes me sad at the same time. I can't explain why it's my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI've followed you on Pinterest. Have a truly splendid day!
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a lullaby story since my children did not l ike my singing. However, one daughter, as a teenager, loved to listed to the CD of "Greater Than Us All."

ReplyDeleteI sing I Love You, A Bushel and A Peck every night to my son, have since he was born.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Germany. My mom had 4 kids (she is an amazing lady, born with only one hand, very beautiful, perky and she still is. she made us dresses and she went skiing, and made lace) so we had for a few years when we were tiny, a german maid, Gertrude, She was a doll and I remember her so well.
ReplyDeleteShe loved to dance in the house with me.
She used to sing this song every single night:
Guten Abend, gute Nacht, mit Rosen bedacht, mit Näglein besteckt, schlupf unter die Deck:
Morgen früh, wenn Gott will, wirst du wieder geweckt, morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
wirst du wieder geweckt.
Guten Abend gute Nacht,
von Englein bewacht, die zeigen im Traum
dir Christkindleins Baum: Schlaf nur selig und süß, schau im Traum's Paradies,
schlaf nur selig und süß, schau im Traum's Paradies.
I can still sing it. It was I think... written by Johannes Brahms, one of my favorite composers

ReplyDelete"Circle GAMES" by Joni Mitchell.
ReplyDeleteYesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game.

ReplyDeleteEach my babies ended up with a different hymn. "I am a Child of God", "I Feel My Savior's Love", "I Need Thee Every Hour" and I forget the fourth. It would help calm me while dealing with a fussy baby. Now, if I start randomly humming, it almost always ends up turning into "Edelweiss" from Sound of Music.
