Fall at the Cabin - McCall's Quilting

Today I am excited to share a secret finish that I made earlier this year.   And it combines two classic blocks from Fall, the Leaf Block and the Log Cabin Block.   It's called Fall at the Cabin and I just love it!!!!

Fall at the Cabin is featured in McCalls Quilting - September/October issue.    This edition has a whole bevy of fall leaf designs and I was honored to be among them.  Fall at the Cabin is a great bed size quilt finishing at 95" x 95".  I used Fat Quarters to make mine, but it would look equally awesome done in scraps.

As I said earlier, Fall at the Cabin is a combination of two classic blocks that are super fun to piece.   The Leaf block centers go together super fast and are a lot like piecing a nine patch, just a few of your patches are HST's ;)   And then adding a log cabin to any center is always fun.  I love watching the blocks grow!!  And with a fun low volume second set of logs, each layer of the log cabin really stands out.

I used Lella Botique's   Nest fabric line for this quilt.  This was the fabric line the magazine suggested as they wanted a variation of colors in all 6 of the Leaf quilts.  At first I thought, it really doesn't have much of a fall feel, but as I watched the quilt come together, I  just loved it!!!  I love the soft colors and the beautiful prints that just gave this quilt a wonderfully calm fall feeling.

And I just happened to have a bit of leftovers from my Fat Quarter Bundle and so I thought it would be fun to make a second version in a crib size.   I just wanted to see what it would look like with each block in a monochromatic color layout.   And well, how fun is that!!!

I just love seeing how simple fabric placement can totally change the look of a quilt!!   And honestly, I can't say which version I like better, I think they are both just so pretty and totally ready to be snuggled up in ;)

And on both quilts, I decided that adding a beautiful loose feather would just add to that soft fall feel. Almost like leaves tumbling down. I did all of that quilting on a medium-ish scale, so there is a whole lot of texture going on in that background. And I love my  402 Pearl because it just blended perfectly with all of the prints.   It truly is my go to color!!!

And lastly,  one of my  favorite things about this quilt is that it is fun and fast to piece!!!  What of the things I always find myself saying when I am teaching is Fun and Fast.   I just love it!!!   And with these super large blocks made up of pretty basic piecing, you can put this bed size stunner together in no time.

And that is my Fall at the Cabin Quilt!!! I hope you love it just as much as I do ;) And if you make your own, I would love to see it!!!   You can email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com or add it to my flickr group here or post it to social media with  #happyquiltingwithmc ;)  I can't wait to see your Fall at the Cabin Quilts!!!

And that's all for today!!!   I hope that you have a very Happy Quilting Day :)

Linking up these finishes to Sarah's, and Myra's ;)
