Jelly Filled Parade - Smart Cookie Quilt and Giveaway!!

I was super excited when my good friend Vanessa from Lella Boutique  asked if I wanted to participate in a Parade for her new book Jelly Filled.    And I am thrilled today to get to share the quilt I made for the parade along with a giveaway ;)

I absolutely loved Vanessa's first quilt Charm School, a Charm Pack friendly book.  And if you can't tell from the title of her new book Jelly Filled, this book is all about Jelly Rolls!!!

I got to make the Smart Cookie quilt from Jelly Filled and I just love this awesome design, doesn't it just shine!!!    You all know I love a good star quilt, and Stars combined with a Log Cabin design, and then to make it all interlock, brilliant!!!  This quilt just has so much movement, and I just love the twist Vanessa put on traditional blocks.  And it was so fun and fast to piece :)

And I know that this is a "Jelly Filled" quilt, but I actually used a Half Yard bundle instead of Jelly Rolls :)   But can you blame me??  And soon as I saw the design of this quilt, I just knew it would be perfect for a bundle of New Ombre Colors  that I had.   I just loved the ideas of the Log Cabin parts of the blocks being an Ombre gradient of lights and darks.   It took me a little while to figure out how to get it all cut, but it was totally worth it.  Wouldn't you agree!!!

And  I took some pictures along the way of cutting, Just in case you want to make an Ombre Smart Cookie as well :)   You can just use the following directions along with your Jelly Filled Book instructions.  And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me :)

So first off, for the quilt top you will need:

12 Half Yard Cuts of any Ombre Fabric (I used the New Colors bundle)
        - From the pattern, these will be used as the 12 Print Fat Quarters as well as the Cream Fabric.
Cut according to the instructions below using the pattern for sizes :)

2 Yards of White Grunge or White Solid
          - From the pattern, this yardage will be used as the Black Fabric
Cut according to the instructions in the pattern ;)

Do the following 4 steps for each of the 12 Half Yard cuts.   The top or darker part will become your "print" pieces and the bottom or lighter part will become your "cream" pieces

Trim the 2 sides and top and bottom of  the Half Yardage piece so you have (2) 17 1/2" x 20" squares.  Keep the two squares stacked on top of each other with wrong sides together.

Cut a 2 1/2" x 17 1/2" strip from the top and bottom of the trimmed squares.
Then cut the remaining square vertically into (2) 12 1/2" x 15" rectangles and (2) 5"  x 15" rectangles.  Set the 5" x 15" rectangles aside for a moment.

From the (2) 12 1/2" x 15" rectangles cut horizontally to make (12) 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" in 6 rows.

The top three rows along with the Top 17 1/2" strip cut in the step above become the Print Rectangles from the pattern and you will use the "or 12 Fat Quarters" instructions from the Pattern to cut the Print Rectangles Designated below.

The bottom three rows along with the Bottom 17 1/2" strip cut in the step above become the Cream Rectangles from the pattern.  Follow the size directions below and take note of which pieces go in Block 1 (making 2 per Half Yard Piece) and which go in Block 2  (making 1 per Half Yard Piece).

And finally, grab the (2)  5" x 15" rectangles that were set aside.
From the first rectangle cut (2) 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles to use for the "cream" fabrics in Block 1
From the second rectangle cut (3) 5" x 5" squares to be used in the Step 2 directions of both Blocks

And now you are all set to piece your quilt!!!   And then when it is all pieced together, you can quilt and bind it and have an awesome Ombre Smart Cookie quilt as well ;)    I decided to quilt mine with an all over bubble swirl ;)   And I used a Rainbow variegated thread and I just love how it adds to all of that ombre goodness of the quilt!!!

And of course, it creates some gorgeous texture as well!!!   I used a black grunge binding and it finishes off this ombre rainbow just perfectly :)  Isn't it just so fun!!!  The quilt finishes at 84" square so it will make for an awesome quilt to take on a picnic or snuggle up in.

And that is my Smart Cookie quilt from Vanessa Goertzen's new Jelly Filled book, made using the gorgeous new Ombre Fabrics by Vanessa Christensen.    And I absolutely love, love, love the way it turned out!!!  Thank you so much to Vanessa for having me along this fun parade :)  And be sure to check out Vanessa's blog for lots more quilts from Jelly Filled!!!

And a Parade wouldn't be complete without a Giveaway!!!   C & T Publishing has a copy of Jelly Filled for one lucky Happy Quilting reader!!!

  25. I love this quilt.

I'm not sure I have a favorite precut. If I'm angry sewing, then a layer cake because it comes together quickly. Strip piecing is mellow. Charm packs make sweet small things. I guess they all have a place in my sewing.
