Tetris Quilt-A-Long - The Rundown and A Giveaway

So the Tetris Color Charm Swap is just about finished up which means we are ready to get going on the Quilt-A-Long.  The Tetris Quilt-A-Long will officially start on July 17th, and will have weekly posts each Tuesday until August 28th, with a Parade and Grand Prizes on September 11th.  So . . . How about a rundown on how it's going to work!!

THE HOW TO

When I came up with this idea I wanted it to be pieced as if you are playing the game.  Therefor, their isn't a set pattern.  For 6 weeks, on each Tuesday ( July 17th - Aug 21 ) you will be given the tools needed to build  a block.  Everyone's blocks will be different as everyone has their own strategy on how to play.

I think the easiest way to explain will be to just show an example.  Do Not build this block.  It is only an example!!!

You will need to print off a grid each week to start.  This is a basic 6 x 6 grid.  You can draw it on a piece of paper or just print off this diagram.  It doesn't have to be fancy, just workable :)

On each Tuesday post you will be given a group of Tetris Pieces.  They will vary in color and shape.  It will look something like this.  (Except it will be a bit larger and more spaced out :)

Starting with the first rectangle, color the first "piece" into your grid.  Now if you have never played Tetris before here is a bit of a crash course on placing your pieces.  Your piece will continue to move down the grid until it hits another piece or the bottom of the grid.  (So don't color your first block in the center of the grid, that's impossible).  If the rectangle has more than one piece in it that doesn't mean you use all of those pieces.  Those are just the variations on how that  piece can be used.  Choose the variation that works the best for you.  And Tetris was a timed game.  So don't think about it to much.  Just place your piece and move on to the next one.  (Having little holes here and there looks cool.  When you get to the top of your grid and can't fit any more pieces you are done.

So . . . as if that isn't totally confusing.  Let's show the example on how I "played" these particular pieces.  (Remember, everyone's will be different but this just gives you the idea of how it works :)

Hopefully that helps to illustrate how to "play".  Now, you have a grid drawn on a piece of paper but this is a quilt-a-long.  So now it is time to sew the grid into a block  So you need fabric.  Those that participated in the charm swap will already have the charms they need.  If you are cutting from your own stash you will want to cut appx. 224 5" print charms.  28 charms in the 8 colors (red, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, pink, and white) used, and if possible in sets of 4.  (So 7 different prints of each color, and 4 charms cut out of each print).  Here is my stack of charms.  Isn't it fun :)

So . . . using your grid as a guide, layout your charm squares to create a copy of your grid.  This is where having the 4 charms of one print comes in handy.  I use the 4 charms to create each piece so that it really adds to the illusion of the Tetris game :)

Now you can sew your charms into a block.  Start by sewing your charms into rows.  Then, taking care to match seams, sew the rows into the quilt block.  (If you are in need of more detailed instructions on how to sew square grids (or patch blocks as they are referred to) you can find a more detailed description here.  It is a 4 x 4 layout but the concept is the same and should help :)   Sorry there is no picture here but as this is only an example I didn't want to have to unpick the block as soon as I was done :)

We will be sewing 6 blocks in 6 weeks and then finishing up the quilt top by sewing our blocks into a 2 x 3 layout and adding borders.  The quilt will measure 54 x 81 with the blocks sewn together and then borders can be added as you like to finish it to the size you desire.  It will look a little like this :)

ALTERATIONS

I really want to keep this fun and I want you to be super happy with your results, so with that in mind . . . Please don't feel like you have to make yours exactly like mine.  Make it so you will be happy with it.

If you don't like a color I am using . . . Don't use it.  Just pick another color when that one pops up.

If you don't like the size square I am using . . . Use a different size.  To figure out the total size of your quilt just take your size square minus .5 and then times that number by 12 for the width and by 18 for the length.

If you don't like the size grid I am using . . .  Make up your own grid.  I am doing 6 x6 so that when we sew the blocks together you can get a lot of variation in the layout.  But you can do a rectangle grid if you want a different size quilt.  To figure your total size just take your square size minus .5 and times it by the number of squares going across the entire width of your quilt.  Do the same for the length.  (But I would suggest keeping a 6 block layout as the prizes and playing coincide with that :)

If you run out of pieces in a week . . . Either make up your own or go back to the top and start over :)

If you don't like print charms . . . Use solids instead.

If you don't want to use 4 charms of the same print to make up a piece . . . Don't.  Make it super scrappy fun

If you don't like the idea of just squares . . . Make it fancy.  I think a HST version could look really cool!!

You get the idea right . . . Just feel free to go outside the box and make it your own :)

THE PRIZES

I am so very excited about the Prizes for this Quilt-A-Long!!  I don't know about you, but I know that I am highly more motivated to keep up and finish when there are prizes at stake ;)  So how about this for a little motivation.

Hoolay Mail Batman!!!!

I have been out of town with family for the last week.  My husband was home and mentioned that a "few" packages had arrived.  I was excited to arrive home last night and see the "few" packages stacked all over the table!!

So of course, instead of doing the laundry, I busted them open and starting sorting.  So much fun!!!  The charms in the box I had completed before leaving.  They represent 1/4 of the swap.  The 4 piles of charms just need to be bagged.  And today, I get to sort the row of charms!!!  I am only waiting on 4 more packages and then they have all arrived.  Looks like a trip to the post office will be in order soon :)

So that means . . . The Tetris Quilt-A-Long is just about ready to get started.  Check back tomorrow for lots of details and a giveaway :)

BasicGrey Pattern Giveaway!!!

I love BasicGrey!!!  Their fabric lines are fantastic.  Their mixture of colors is always stunning and I love how they add grunge prints with their lines.  I am currently working on a Braided Irish Chain using Hello Luscious and am just starting a new bed quilt using their soon to be released line Little Black Dress. (Which is totally drool worthy!!)

So . . . You can imagine how excited I was when I contacted by Shara of BasicGrey.  She is just amazing and I am so happy to have gotten to know her better.  And I was  thrilled when she offered to let me give some of her patterns for their new upcoming Blitzen line away to a lucky reader!!!  (And I am sure you are equally thrilled!!)

BasicGrey's patterns are fantastic!!!  Their directions are so easy to understand.  The layout is super easy to follow and the diagrams are full color and absolutely fabulous.  And with lots of size options for each pattern you are sure to find the quilt that will work for you.

Don't you just love these patterns!!!!

Would you like to win your own copies???  Just leave me a comment.  You can tell me if you have any Christmas in July projects planned :)  I will choose 2 lucky winners on Wednesday the 11th!!

Good Luck and Have a Happy Quilting Day!!!

TNT Hosted by My Daughter (Yes, I am a proud mom)

Today is kind of fun because I get to show what my Daughter Tried New this week. Last week Jessica, my 6 year old,  asked if she could go down to Grandma's because she wanted to sew a skirt.  2 days later she was so excited to show off her very first handmade garment!!!  Isn't it adorable :)

A huge thank you to Grandma for helping her through the steps of sewing her first skirt.  Grandma is an amazing seamstress, a wonderful teacher, and has incredible patience.  A perfect combination for teaching beginning skirt making!!  She pinned up the pleats and then had Jessi sew them all in.  I was blown away with how perfect they look for her first time doing pleats.  (I have never done pleats so it is something I will have to TNT as well :)

Jessi sewed in the waist band, which the pattern didn't originally call for but she is such a twig that the original wouldn't stay up.  She got a little off on one of the seams but recovered well :)  (And just if in case you are curious, no she didn't put in the zipper, Grandma helped with that part :)

And she finished it off by sewing the hem along the bottom of the skirt which she kept pretty straight.  She is quite the little seamstress already!!!  I am so proud of her!!!!  And I am so excited because she absolutely loved sewing and especially with her Grandma!!

She already has 2 more skirts planned.  And I hear that Grandma has 2 more granddaughters requesting to make their own skirts as well :)  Good thing Grandma just bought some new sewing machines.  Looks like she will soon be hosting classes for all her granddaughters ;)

So that is what my Daughter, Jessica, has tried new this week.  How about you??  Link on up :)

Sweet Celebrations!!!!

I am just over the moon with excitement about Sweet Celebrations !!!  This book is going to be incredible :) Sweet Celebrations has over 35 projects from myself and some of my amazing Moda Bake Shop Chef buddies and is compiled by Lissa Alexander.

It will be on shelves in October.  That is just 4 months away!!!  When I shipped off my projects last fall I knew it was going to be a long wait and I can't believe it is almost here :)

And to get to see my projects photographs of how they will look in the book . . .  totally amazing!!!  I mean, aren't those 2 little kids in the bottom left hand corner sitting over the Birthday Table Topper (that I made, squeal!!) just the cutest!!!  So excited!!!

More fun to come in the future with this incredible book . . . I can hardly wait :)

Doing Good on the I-15

Do you remember me saying I was going to try to whip up a little something up for Operation Wood Hollow??  We'll I got it whipped up :)  These were some bee blocks from the Amazing VIBee's group.  My original plan for them didn't pan out so I figured they would be perfect for this project.  Isn't it just fun!!!

I sewed up the floating blocks layout on Thursday evening and then quilted up this cute little loopy all over pattern.  I love to FMQ loops.  They are just so fun and go together pretty fast :)

And I found this cute little farmer print in my stash from some years ago.  So adorable!!

My Mother-In-Law had 6 quilts to go to the Project and I had my 2 so it made quite the little stack of quilts to be donated Julie.

It was so fun to get to meet Julie.  I was headed to Salt Lake yesterday to see my family so Julie met me in Nephi at the good old Wendy's to pick up the quilts.  It was amazed to her the new updates on how the project is going.  Julie has had such a wonderful response that she is expanding Operation Wood Hollow to include wild fire victims across the west.  Take a minute and check it out and see what you can do for good :)

She Can Hear!!!

Let's start with a bit of back story.  Since our sweet little Jocelyn was born she has not been able to pass a hearing test.  She really doesn't respond much to loud noises (which, with 4 siblings who tend to get loud, can actually be quite nice during nap time.)  We have been going through the process of testing, monitoring, and waiting for her to grow.  She has had liquid junk in her middle ear which has blocked the ability for sound to travel to her inner ear.  There were times we thought it was clearing on it's own, but just as soon as we were hopeful, it would get all blocked again.

So . . . At her 9 month follow-up and failure of another auditory test on Tuesday, and checking-up with the ENT on Wednesday, it was decided that she needs tubes put in her ears on Thursday!!    So . . . bright and early Thursday morning we arrived at the hospital. Now I know this is a totally routine surgery, (our second had it done at 9M for ear infections) and that the physician's will do a wonderful job, and that Josie would do great, but I still couldn't help but get nervous.  I guess that is just part of being a mom, we worry!!!

Jocelyn got to wear a cute little gown with tiger's on it. Isn't she cute!! She was a pro waiting for the surgery.  She just played with her toys and examined her new surroundings.  I was quite impressed considering she should have been super hungry.  She is such a good little girl.

Her new favorite toy arrived in the form of a monitor.  This one was hard to keep out of her mouth :)  She liked that the part on her toe kept glowing red.   . . .   And before you knew it she was headed back for surgery.

I didn't take anymore pictures as she came back feeling pretty lousy trying to shake off the anesthesia.  We took her home and after a bottle and a nap she was back to her happy self . . . with one slight change.  When I hollered down the stairs for the kids to come up for lunch (I am to lazy to walk down them) I was shocked that Josie started crying behind me.  I had startled her with my hollering.   This has never happened before.   And then a few minutes later, when my son let out a Hooray for Mac and Cheese shout, she startled again and began to cry.

Those tears are such a blessing!!!  She can hear.  I am just so happy for her.  What a wonderful ending to a nerve-racking 9 months.  We started out fearing she was deaf, to hoping she would be able to hear with hearing aids, to perfect hearing (I hope, we have to follow up in a few weeks) with the aid of tubes.  I am just overjoyed.  Now the kids and I just have to work on keeping our voices down.  I can't imagine how it must be to go from a soundless/muffled world to a noisy and loud world. But, I can say, I am so happy that we will be going through the transition!!

TNT gets Swapping

So what have I been trying new this week??  I have been hosting my first swap!!!  And it has been so much fun!!!  I got my fabric on Tuesday evening and cut my charms Wednesday morning.

And then when I checked the mail on Wednesday I found 2 packages!!  Yippee Skippee!!! I have to say, opening these packages is so much fun.  I get so excited to see the charms that come out.

I am going to try to really stay on top of this swap so I can get the charms back to everyone as soon as they all arrive.  I started sorting the piles as soon as I opened the mail :)  If I keep enjoying this so much I bet it won't be long before I host another :)

UPDATE - The postman just dropped off 4 more packages!! Look at all these beautiful prints!!   This is so much fun :)  I am off to do some more sorting :)

So . . . What have you been trying new this week??  Link on up :)

Operation Wood Hollow

Today I received an email from Julie at Having Fun Quilting.   She and her community have been greatly affected by the terrible wildfire burning across Sanpete County.   The fire has burned over 39,000 acres and 29 homes have been lost so far, with 575 more homes in it's path.   You can read more about it here

So Julie is starting up Operation Wood Hollow to help those families who have lost their homes.  Her goal is to get at least one quilt to every family who have lost their home.  And she needs your help :)  And we all know, quilters are the most generous loving people in the world!!

If you can donate fabric, extra quilt blocks, finished quilt tops, or completed quilts she would love to have them.  Every little bit helps!!  Please contact Julie for details on how you can help.  She will be so happy to hear from you!!  You can read more about Operation Wood Hollow here :)

I am actually heading north this weekend so will be delivering my game  time picnic quilt to Julie.    I imagine it will bring some happiness to a family who have lost so much.     (If I have time, I might try and whip up another little something to help :)

Each of these families have sustained such a loss and will have to replace so very much of their lives. A beautiful handmade quilt can bring so much comfort to them as they being the process of rebuilding.
