The Birthday Girl Strikes!!

Well she is officially 2 so that must mean something "Terrible Two"ish has to happen.  And did it ever!!  I went upstairs yesterday to find my sweet little now 2 year old girl sitting on her sister's bed with crayons in her hand.  This is what she was sitting on.

Instant panic followed by that horrible sinking feeling in your stomach.  I was too late.  It isn't horrible, but it has been colored on none the less.  I set my beautiful little girl in her crib so that I could walk out of the room and calm down / cry.  Anyone have any good suggestions on how to get crayon out??  I am so scared I am just going to set it into the fabric or make it bleed.  Help :)

UPDATE - Thank you all for your great suggestions.  I am trying them out on scrap fabric and will let you know what works best :)    Oh, and I should mention . . . Today is the last day to enter my giveaway if you haven't had a chance yet :)

  1. Oh Melissa I don't have any suggestions but I am thinking of you and wishing you lots of good luck. I would do a lot of googling before I did anything else. Good luck!

  2. I've heard that putting a piece of blotting paper over crayon and then ironing it can help but I've never had to try it.

Its no consolation now but if you can't get the stains out in years to come you maybe won't mind so much. Well thats what my mum tells me about the 'writing' I did in the address book she tresured because it was a gift. These days she sees it as a reminder of the younger me and treasures the writing too.

  5. Melissa, sorry deleted last comment because I called you the wrong name...sorry have answered so many emails this morning I am brain dead!! What I said was, get some pieces of the same fabric, crayon on it with the same crayons and try all the different recommendations on those pieces before you do anything to the quilt. Hugs Linda x

As suggested I would try these on some other fabric before I use them on the quilt.

  8. Oh no!

I've used paper towels and an iron before. Sometimes it works for me, and sometimes it doesn't. And maybe switch to the washable crayons? Although, they are annoying because they run if they get wet (even while being held in a small child's sweaty hand).

    Good luck!

  10. I've gotten crayons out by soaking the fabric in Oxyclean and water. That stuff is amazing. I about cried too the first time I saw a stain on my daughter's quilt I made for her. I had to remind myself that I'm the one who put it in a 3 year-old's room. After other crayon incidents. I always buy the washable ones now. They are totally worth it.

  11. Carbona has these cute little bottles of Stain Devils custom formulated for specific stains. They have an Ink & Crayon one that I love. Well, that I hate to need but love to have on hand...
I find it at JoAnn's Fabric.
btw, I think washable crayons are horrid. Ruined a load of children's clothes when a small, broken off end of a "washable" crayon was washed in a pocket.

  13. 1 - Spray with WD-40 and then soak up with paper towel.

2 - Hand wash with Dawn to remove the residue remaining.

    3 - Wash as normal.

And as has been mentioned, try whatever you decide to try on scraps first!

Good Luck, and please post your results...

  14. Years ago I washed an entire load of my son's new clothes with a green crayon by accident. The problem came when the clothes went into the dryer and the crayon melted onto everything. Avon skin-so-soft was recommended as well as WD-40. Both worked fairly well. I wouldn't recommend the iron and paper towel method because it will just leave the dye behind and take out the wax. Definitely experiment with scraps first.

  15. I wish I had a suggestion, but I don't. When I was little (many, many years ago), I decided to paint my toe nails, red of course, on my Mother's hand crocheted bed spread. It's amazing I survived that episode but it gave her something to hang over my head for well over 50 years.

  16. Have you tried DisolvIt? I used it all the time when my wee ones were little. It is gentle and works on tar, gum, crayons and lots more.

    Welcome to the terrible twos!!

  17. Have you thought of trading in the kid?

  18. I want to second the oxiclean suggestion - their spray oxiclean laundry stain remover is BRILLIANT. I have gotten (out of white quilting fabric) marker, crayon, soda, melted on fruit snacks, and all manner of other crazy things!

definitely try it on some scrap fabric and see if it works with your crayons!

  19. Two is when my oldest one put a giant size jar of vaseline in her hair (baby powder soaks that up by the way), and cried because her worm that she found in the yard died when she gave it a bath. She colored too but only the wall. Good luck! blessings, marlene

  20. Wow! Good luck, I never managed to get crayon off anything. Sorry for the Terrible twos! Our kids were actually worse as 3 year olds than at 2. . .

  21. I hope you get out the crayon, I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said - but I agree with Staci - both my kids were worse as 3 year olds than as 2 year olds! (Although they were both really good kids now that I look back!)

  22. I'd try Oops! Walmart used to carry it. I'm not sure how it works on fabrics, but it definitely takes crayons off of walls. My daughter (now 26)when she was 2 was supposed to be taking a nap, but instead decided to decorate her walls. We used Oops! and it took everything off of the walls. I think we've used it on carpet also. Good stuff.

  23. Thanks to my daughter who once left a crayon in her pocket, which went through the laundry and streaked everything turqouse (so pretty), I know about RIT laundry treatment. It also removed lipstick stains which she also left in a pocket. It's hard to find, but I've bought it from Joann's online. Good luck.

  24. I might try orange oil since I have that on hand. I think there is a method where you use an iron and brown paper to "suck it up" into the paper. Biz is what I use for anything biological..not sure if wax counts but biz is what they use to clean bones for museums...it is amazing.

I have sympathy because one of my twin boys used sharpie on a handmade quilt one of my hubby's aunts gave us...did I mention she had just passed away? I was crying so badly...it broke my heart. It did fade severely with acetone so that at least it is not the first thing you see when you look at it.
