Backings and Bindings

So you remember the three quilts from last week that I have waiting to be quilted??    The bottom is my queen size Starburst Quilt, the middle is my Star Surround from the Quilt-a-Long and the top is my Star Value Bee Quilt.

Well, I am one step closer to quilting :)  I started making a backing for my Star Surround quilt and realized why not get the other backings done as well.  Backings are not one of my favorite parts of making a quilt so doing them in an "assembly fashion" just seemed to make it get done faster :)  After they were done, I thought, I just love when I finish quilting and can bind it right then and there and see it all done!!!  So while I was in the mass production mood, I just went ahead and whipped together the bindings as well ;)  (which I actually really enjoy making, little random but true :)

So now, I am all set and ready to go.  I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see these all grouped together and waiting to go on the long-arm.  I am taking a quilt off the frame today and then Barbara is loading her Star Surround so she can get done in time for the parade. Which means I might not get mine done by the parade, but I am not complaining, I am just grateful there is a long arm available for my use :)

  1. I try to cut and stitch together my bindings as I'm cutting & piecing the top. I have a drawer full of binding, waiting for the quilt to be quilted. I use cardboard from FQs to wrap the binding around.

I also do NOT iron my binding in half. I read somewhere that once you sew it onto one side and then flip it over the edge, you don't always want the fold to be where it is. Permission to not spend forever folding the binding in half and ironing? I'll take it! It hasn't been too difficult to line up all the edges when I'm sewing the binding to the quilt, and it folds over the edge of the quilt so nicely.

  2. I also like to get all my backs together and have an assembly line quilting marathon. I also cut the batting, pick out the top and bottom threads, so I am ready when I get a chance to quilt.

  3. So pretty! Wish I had easy access to one. My "to be quilted" pile is getting out of control.

  5. Great job. I find it interesting how different quilters like/dislike different parts of the quilting process. Sending you a link you might find interesting now that you have a LA. I havent tried it yet but i really want to.

  6. I'd love to see how you assembled your backings. I struggle to do that, because I'm such a stasher/hoarder that I hate to put "good" fabric on the back.

  11. Wow, you are an over-achiever ;-) Your backings look nice and colorful!
I got my Star Surround quilted and binding strips cut, now to sew strips together and attach the whole thing... my least favorite step and I am dragging my feet.

Side question: For the parade, just a photo to you or rather a flickr link or add to your flickr group? Not sure about spoiler alert...
