My Favorite Christmas tradition: My husband gets to dress up as Santa at his work. I have pictures of the kids at different ages sitting on his lap. They think its awesome that daddy is Santa's helper!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas tradition has to be the family get-together. We always follow the same schedule...arrive at brother's house in mid-afternoon, gather for a family photo, distribute and open presents, have dinner, then friends come over to join our family for a huge dessert buffet.

How Santa can find the bags year after year in his workshop and bring the same ones back to our house, I'll never know. Perhaps a very well organized elf is at play?

There was such love and magic in those precious evenings! I would do those childhood years all over again if I had the chance!

ReplyDeleteOur favorite family traditions are probably not very much different then many families, I am assuming, except that we live close to the Grotto of Redemption and enjoy a visit there over the holidays.

But what has not changed is, we go to Christmas eve service. when we come home we have pizza and cake (I used to make a lamb cake) Christmas day we all get together as family and spend the day together. As for my daughter we call her and pass the phone around.

Then they have something to unwrap first thing in the morning- and hopefully stay in bed reading for a bit. Kids are all grown now but still give them books for Christmas. I think they will pass it on to the grandkids when they get a little older.

My favorite Christmas tradition is baking cookies with my father. He remembers making them with his mother when he was 6, so he has been making them for 80 years (one at a time on the stove in a cast iron waffle iron, a slow process). Each cookie is a special treat.

My favorite tradition is making the Italian fried buns stuffed with fish. These are eaten on Christmas Eve. Used to stand on a stool at the counter making the dough with my mother and sister.

ReplyDeleteMy family always has homemade Tex Mex food, enchiladas, rice, tamales on Christmas Eve. It's something my maternal grandparents started way back before my mom was born. I learned how to make all our family favorites when I was younger, so I carry on that tradition with my children. I even have my great grandmother's huge metal spoon to stir the sauce!
ReplyDeleteWe watch the Torchlight Parade down Dollar Mountain at Sun Valley, then enjoy cookies, hot chocolate and carolers dressed in 19th Century finery. Everyone is in a festive mood and strangers exchange Merry Christmas wishes to all they pass by. Then home for a Christmas Eve meal, and time with family!

ReplyDeleteI gave my son a Terry's Chocolate Orange in a stocking one year. Turns out he doesn't like them. Another year I had forgotten he didn't like them and gave him another one. We had a good laugh over it. I kept it and gave it to him again the following year, as a joke. He didn't know whether I had lost my mind; the look on his face was priceless. So I keep it in a cupboard and put it in his stocking every year for a laugh. It's a quirky favourite but now it's tradition.
