Another Hand Update and a Few Tidbits

It has been a super wonderful weekend spent with family as I watched the General Conference for my LDS faith.   It is always such a pick me up as it is filled with messages of faith, hope, and love.   And I have to say, it was super nice to have the pick me up this weekend, because this second hand surgery is kind of kicking my tush.
I know it has only been 4 days, but the fact that my right hand is still healing makes having a very limited left hand all the harder. And keeping it real here, I might have had a little break down on Friday night (after spending the day doing more than I should have been doing) and my sweetheart was kind enough to listen to me whine, all the way through and then just hug me and let me know that it was all going to be okay.  (he's a keeper :)  And I do know that it will all be worth it and that I couldn't keep doing what I was doing.  This has been an issue for 10 years and it was so time to get it fixed.  And hey, it already feels better today after giving it the weekend off :)  So ya, it was just such an incredible blessing to spend an entire weekend with extended family and to have such a great reminder of how much there is to enjoy and all the good there is, when we just slow down to see it!!!!

And part of that slowing down included starting a new book, to actually read and not listen to ;)  A bit ago, Rhonda Cratty sent me a copy of her new book, Our Family Quilt.  It is cute story about a grandmother passing on her quilting legacy to her granddaughter.  I am enjoying just slowing down and getting to read this sweet story that reminds me a lot of my mother passing on her quilting knowledge to me, and that just makes my heart smile :)

And one last tidbit,  Fat Quarter Shop announced this morning that my Royal Quilt won the first round of the Cake Mix Bake Off.  How fun is that!!  Thank you to everyone that voted and be sure to pop on over to Fat Quarter Shop and vote for your favorite in Round 2.  The new quilts are just gorgeous, it is going to be tough to pick a favorite!!!

And that's all for today ;)  I hope you have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!

  2. I am so glad you're feeling better. I have also had that surgery on both hands and the second one landed me into the hospital with an autoimmune reaction and pericarditis! Take it easy!! I had an excellent hand therapist - if you have the opportunity to have it, use it. Made a big difference in recovery. Until then, read on, look at old magazines and plan all those beautiful quilts to come.

  3. It is good that resting helped and it feels better. Take the time and let your body heal. Here's to hoping that it all goes well and you are back to quilting in no time. :)

  4. I know that feeling and hope your hand heals quickly.
I always over do it, so just do some simple sewing and let it heal.

  5. This may give you a smile Melissa. I am SO jealous of the small amount of coverage you have as far as bandaging from your surgery! I don't believe I told you I too had that surgery a few years back on both my hands, BUT, I was forced to do the surgery so I could get a two for one price, much like I did when I had twins. HA. Kidding. They don't give two for one pricing on anything like either of those. Anyway, I say I was forced because I had developed trigger finger in both my thumbs. I had ignored that for as long as possible after doing the option of cortisone shots twice in each thumb. I had both the trigger finger surgery and carpal tunnel surgery on each hand about six weeks apart. When my surgeries were done, I had multiple layers of padding material to protect the stitches from both surgeries and then a cast type of thing placed on my hand to prevent any movement. Then on top of that was wrapping. It wasn't a full cast but mostly along the inside wrist and up into the palm of my hand to prevent any movement of my thumb or wrist. And you? A couple of tape stitches from the looks of it. LOL I have to say that being told I couldn't get it wet for the six weeks gave me a lot of panic. There was NO way I was going that long without a shower or washing my hair. Funny when given that type of restriction the things you do to adapt. LOL

Of course, with the small amount of coverage over those incisions, it also gave you the ability to move your hand, which in turn allowed you to push yourself. I can pretty much guess, that just about any of us would have done the same; including the meltdown. You just don't realize when you see such small incisions how MUCH pain they can cause if you do push yourself. Heck, I was all wrapped up the way I was and still pushing myself. It took me about 3-4 days before the horrible pain had subsided enough to allow me to, but yep, I did the same as you. I wasn't supposed to use the hand, but I did. I was typing a lot and wasn't supposed to be moving my fingers quite that much. My meltdown lasted for about five weeks though because I was too stupid to learn from the first few times of pushing myself and after resting the hand a few days, I did it all over again. LOL

And now I have trigger finger on one hand in my index finger. :( SO not pleased with that. I've already had one shot back in November and need to get another one very soon. I know it's headed to surgery by the end of this year too. ugh.

Hugs Melissa. I understand. Don't feel too bad about pushing yourself. We all would have done the same I'm sure. I hope it feels better very quickly.

  6. It sounds like the timing was perfect, and good that you had some time and productive distraction to rest your poor hand. I hope you are much better now; it's hard not to do too much, especially when you've been unable to do things the way you want for so long! Hugs. :)

  8. I too enjoyed General Conference. It is always inspiring. I am sorry to hear about your hands. I can't even imagine going without the use of my hands or having them in pain for very long. I would be bored out of my mind. A book was a great idea! I have been so busy with my "hands" that I haven't read a good book in a couple of years.

Enjoy your book and take the time to heal properly.

  13. Hopefully, yesterday was your worst day and they will all be better from here on. You get so much accomplished even with having surgery. How do you do so much? I must be very unorganized or maybe I just can't commit to a plan?? Would love to know your secret. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Vicky

  14. Thoroughly enjoyed General Conference as well ;) So very, very happy to hear the announcement of a temple in our Pocatello area!! Finally!
Hope your recovery from surgery is swift! I know how awkward it can be to try to get things accomplished while recovering.

  15. Wow, you have a lot on your plate with both hands in the healing stage. The book sounds like a good one. I'll have to look it up, as I am trying to plant the seed in my two-year-old granddaughter as I let her play with my quilts and make her small items on my sewing machine.

  17. take it easy!!! The quilts can wait, and I hope you will keep taking it easy so you will heal up. And we all have melt-downs. So glad you had your hubby and your family around this weekend. It was the perfect weekend for General Conference: gave you an excuse to not do anything with your hands. :-) I'll keep up the prayers for you. Hugs!!!

  18. I remember breaking my wrist a few years back. During the holidays for a longamer is no good. But glad I took the time to heal as I was able to get back to working a little over a month later. Take it as easy as you can and you'll be back to yourself in no time.
