  3. Ooooh...I love that collections. I don't have great ideas for schools out; we usually start the summer with a big clean out. That doesn't thrill my kids, but it makes the rest of the summer more enjoyable.

  4. Take your kids to a museum that features activities. My kids loved the dress up costumes and playing the games that are part of the history they are featuring.

  5. When I was a kid we had a Park Lady that would come everyday with crafts. Too bad that isn’t done now. My kids liked going to the movies.

  14. For several years in a row, we headed to the beaches in Destin with our daughter, her family, and sometimes our son and his family. Last year was a bummer. Our daughter's father-in-law died, and they had to come back home. So we came back the next day. It's just no fun without them. We were supposed to stay until the next week when our son and his family came.
We got home to a flooded bathroom and bedroom. So it all worked out, but gosh, what a mess!

They have a water park down the road, so we'd spend the morning there, pack a picnic lunch, then head to the amusement park in the afternoon. When we lived near Tampa, Florida residents got a discount on annual passes, so it was cheaper to buy the pass than to buy a one day ticket!

  51. My kids always wanted to enroll in a summer sport or instrument program. We did a lot of parks, crafts, sometimes we would take two day trips or blueberry or apple picking picking. We would go to craft shows, help at an animal shelter, museums (especially if they were outside) They would spend a week at grandmas house. As they got older, grandma would give them work to do and pay them. My sister and I would swap kids for a week. We went to forest preserves, a lot of times they would have activities. The zoo was always a favorite place. Many times it would be a full family event. But as busy as the summer was, I always made sure that they had time at home that they could read or just chill.

  76. I am 76 years old, and my children are long gone. I have been sitting here thinking of what they did during the summers. I know they read a lot, helped with chores, and worked in the corn fields when they got older. We were school teachers, and we would travel to see family during the holidays.

  77. My boys are all out of school now, but we used to go to a local beach, the library (which had entertainment in the summer), or just stay home and run through the sprinkler. We had quite a few picnics at the playground.

  79. Backyard camping. Drape some quilts over the clotheline if you have one haha! That's what my sisters and I did in the absence of a tent. The upside to backyard camping is: can come inside during bad weather, bathroom vs. porta potty, cook meals on the family grill vs starting a fire.
We loved crafting too, catching fish, frogs at the local creek.

I think it's because she's bored and more willing to do things than usual but I can't complain! I loved when I had littles... why did they grow up so fast...lol

  139. We lived on a farm when the kids were younger, so there was always something to do... but sometimes we just needed a bit of 'civilization"! So, I'd give them each a dollar, head to the dollar store and give them half an hour to find something they REALLY wanted - the thrill of the hunt always made for a fun time! Of course, my son almost always grabbed the first thing he saw, but his older sisters did a LOT of comparison shopping. Good lessons now that they're all grown up!

I think summer is great for encouraging kids to use their imaginations, hanging out and coming up with games and activities; I remember playing pick up games of ball with funky rules, and neighborhood-wide hide and seek, and we roller-skated and rode bikes.
