Jacks - HQUM Quilt 1

It is Quilt #1 of my the Happy Quilting Ultra Marathon!!!   And I am so excited to have this quilt finished because it is for my SIL, Treyson  :)   I started this one before Jessi and Trey's wedding, but it got put aside at quilting time, more on that to come . . . but now, it is ready to be loved and snuggled in!!   So here it is in all of it's Cowboy goodness . . . Jacks, although, in my mind, this edition is Spurs ;)

The Jacks quilt is from my Fast & Fun Lap Quilts Book.  This quilt is the cover quilt on the book and I just love it.   There are some more no -waste lattice units and a whole bunch of stitch and flip corners.  And you have to love the scrappy binding to finish it all off, so cute!!!

Treyson  is pure cowboy  . . . so when I saw the Cowboys Layer Cake from Riley Blake Designs I knew it would be the perfect fit for him.   And this picture also shows why the quilt was waiting in the "to be quilted" pile.  If you recall from their other wedding quilt . . . Jessi and Treyson like a cuddly backing!   So I decided to try something new, and I was a little nervous about it. (hence the wait)   Instead of a traditional backing, or an expensive cuddle backing, I bought a super soft, super heavy, textured blanket from TJ Maxx for $20 to try out as a backing.  It took a little bit of finagling to get it loaded on the longarm because the edges were all finished and it was a super thick to keep rolled up.  But I am so happy to say, that once it was on, it quilted up just great!!

And for the quilting, I just did an all over wavy line.  The design of the backing had a vertical strip texture, so I thought just weaving back and forth over that design would be the easiest way to keep it smooth and blend in.   And it turned out so great!!  And Treyson just loves that the quilt is now almost a "weighted" quilt, thanks to the extra weight from the backing.  I didn't even add batting it was already so thick and heavy.  Just perfect!!  Putting on the binding was a little more tedious as well, but totally doable.  All in all, I think it was a great success and I will be trying this method of backing out again in the future :)

And that is my Jacks Quilt!!  And Treyson has already taken it home to snuggle in :)   And seeing him smile when he came over to pick it up, priceless!!   Just so happy making :)

And that is Quilt #1 - Jacks ;)  1 Down and 51 more quilts to go in the Happy Quilting Ultra Marathon :)   And yes, I had a bit of a slow start, (I had to have a root canal redone last week and it put me out for a few days), but I plan on catching up this week!!!

And that is it for today, thanks for popping in to share this finish with me!!!

I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!
