ReplyDeleteMy fav ornament is glass in the shape of a heart with a piece of grandmother's hand-made lace inside.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite ornament was made by a second grade student from clay with a cookie cutter. I had each student make two or three. We glazed them after the first baking in the kiln with a simple white glazing. Then I put a narrow red ribbon in each after working very hard to get the glaze out of the previous stamped hole. The glaze tended to fill in that hole. The students' ornaments have rough edges because they were so young and too excited to finish off the edges smoothly. The students all donated one to the Festival of Trees Gift Shop, a yearly event to raise money for the children's pediatric hospital in Salt Lake City that serves Utah, Idaho, and part of Wyoming. It has been two decades since we did this, so this ornament is a treasure now. We had time in those days to do art projects like this. The children were so excited to help sick children!

It's hard for me to single out any one specific ornament. Our Christmas tree is a reminder of all the places we have visited. We always pick up something that's particular to that place - and usually it's not an "ornament" but something we can adapt. Trimming the tree always takes a while since we spend a lot of time "remember when"-ing. :)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas tree ornament is a wooden blue bird, made by my great-aunt for me when I was a little girl. I never knew that aunt, but she adored my dad, and I feel that love for him whenever I see that little bird; she made it for me because I was the daughter of the little boy she had adored. It always helped me to see him as more than my dad, as someone's nephew, as someone's blonde boy. And now I'm the great-aunt, and I understand how love for the parent gets showered onto their children.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas ornament? I don't know how to pick and choose! I guess I would pick the one I "inherited" that my Mother made (beaded/sequin) from a kit when I was very young and she hung it above the bar every year along with many others because she felt they were too big to hang on the tree. I love them all to be honest and most are handmade from beaded/sequin ornament kits.
ReplyDeleteI just liked them on facebook. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this qualifies for an ornament, but my favorite Christmas time decoration is the nativity set that my mother made for me many years ago. I now set it up with the help of 2 of my g'babies & when the whole family gathers, the oldest g'baby reads the story of Christ's birth & the youngest, puts baby Jesus in the manger. It always feels like my mother is still with us!
