Christmas Cheer Quilt

After last weeks share of a Spring Market quilt, I am being sure that this Fall Market quilt doesn't get forgotten ;)   I didn't go to Fall Market this year, but I was super excited to get to make a quilt that was there :)  My wonderful friends at Moda asked if I could make a Christmas Cheer quilt and I just loved sewing it up. I mean, how can you not love that first off, it's a row quilt which are always so fun and second, it's Christmas, and it certainly made me feel that wonderful Christmas Cheer!!!

This quilt uses Bonnie and Camille's new Vintage Holiday fabric that was shown at Fall Market.  It will be coming to shops in April of 2018 and you are so going to want to scoop some up.  I just love the prints and colors and there is even some silver metallic hints in the line.  So fun!!!

And as I said before, I just love sewing row quilts!!!  I just love sewing all of the different blocks and seeing them all come together into the quilt.   Of course, they take a little longer to cut out, but luckily I don't mind that step to much :)   And aren't these rows just to cute!!!  Those stars finish at 4", I love little patchwork!!!   And those Santa Hats are just so fun, especially with the silver metallic stripe on the band and ball :)   I really had fun piecing each and every row and every row became my new favorite.

When it came time to quilt it, I decided for a favorite all over Curly Q.   This really lets each of the pieced rows stand out for itself, and it is nice and fast, and considering I was doing this quilt in that good ol' market time crunch, fast was important :)

And I just love the wonderful texture it gives the quilt as well.  Doesn't that just make you want to snuggle up in front of a fire place and listen to some Christmas music :)

And that is Christmas Cheer :)   Thank you so much to my good friends at Moda!!!  I am so glad that I got to sew this incredibly cheerful quilt together and have a little part of Fall Market :)  And you better believe I was listening to Christmas Tunes the whole time I was sewing and now, I think they are here to stay until December, and I just love it!!!

I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Weekend!!

Linking up this finish to Amanda's, Sarah's, and Myra's :)

Bella Skill Builder Quilt Top!!!

Today is a pretty fun day, because after 9 months of working on blocks for the  Bella Skill Builder we are not putting them all together!!!!   That means a finished quilt top, eeekk!!!   And I didn't do the same finished layout as hosts,  Fat Quarter Shop and Sherri McConnell but I am still so loving it!!!!  I just wanted to really play up the color graduation in those blocks and I think it turned out so fun ;)

This has been such a fun quilt along and has really pushed me to try some new skills, and I am so super happy about that.  And I had so much fun playing with all of the different Bella Solids to create the fun tone on tone effect in each block.  I just love it!!!  And  now all that is left is to quilt it up.  I have a few ideas but I haven't for sure decided, but I do know it will be using lots of pretty colored threads!!!!   My goal is to share the finish for next month, ya know, build a block each month, only seems right to quilt it and share it next month :)

And that is my Bella Skill Builder quilt top!!!!  If you are following the original layout, you can find the  free pattern for putting the quilt top together right here.  And also pop on over to the  Fat Quarter Shop's blog, Jolly Jabber  for lots more Bella Skill Builder Quilt Top fun from lots more blogger friends ;)     I am so excited to finish this up this month.  Time to get quilting ;)

Have a Happy Quilting Day!!!

October Sew Sampler Box!!!

Wow, it's like I blinked and October came and has just about went.   I still need to figure out Halloween costumes (good think we have a dress up box that is overflowing ;) But with October coming to a close, it means happy mail in another wonderful Sew Sampler box arriving :)  This month's theme is Nightfall Reflections and I might have just squealed out loud when I opened this box!!

And I mean, how can you not, when there is Tula inside!!!!  Yup, I am a total Tula Trooper so when I found this gorgeous Spirit Animal Fat Quarter Bundle tucked inside my box, I was pretty excited :)  Now to decide if I want to make that beautiful Mesa Valley Quilt, or hoard that Tula on my shelf.  Only time will tell, tee hee hee ;)

And my daughter has already claimed this super cute Everything Mary Zip Around Sewing Kit!!!   And I have to say, I am pretty excited that she want's her very own sewing kit!!!   I tried to make it seem like it was hard for me to give it to her, but inside I was like, Yes, Yes, Yes!!!  I love being able to sew with my children and see them get equally excited ;)

And how cute is this Bitty Buddy container.   Barbara and I were just saying the other day that we needed something at the Quilt House to put in the middle of the sewing machines for the grandkids to through all of their bits and pieces in.  It's like I put a thought out there, and Fat Quarter Shop just grants my request.  So perfect!!!  And speaking of Barbara, she is getting the Sticky Thimble Dots, because you all know I am still not great at hand stitching as she is still so sweet to do my hand bindings, so ya, she will need them much more than I, and she is pretty excited about them too!!!

And of course, there is this month's Basket Block!!!   I am just loving all of these little baskets and I really want to just make them all up.   It's about this point where it is always hard for me to wait for next month's pattern because I just can't wait to see it come together ;)  But hey, it's a good practice in patience, right, and it will make the final quilt all the more exciting!!!

And that is my October Sew Sampler Box  . . . and I have to say, what made this box so great is that there was something for everyone around me that loves this quilting passion as much as I do !!!!  And getting to quilt with the ones you love is what makes is so fun!!!

I hope you all have a very Happy Quilting Day!!!!

Turning Time and Jack and Jill - Cake Mix Quilts

Considering this week is Quilt Market, I figured it only fitting to share 2 quilts that I made for Spring Market that somehow I missed sharing.   Ya know how things go ;)  Anyhow, I was fortunate enough last spring to be asked by my friends at Moda if I wanted to play with some of the new Moda Cake Mixes.  They had just released Cake Mixes 5, 6, 7, and 8 and I decided to play with 5, and 6.  And goodness did I have fun!!!

So let's start with Cake Mix Recipe 5 or as I like to call it . . .  Turning Time.   I absolutely love the way you can create 2 totally different look for the blocks, using the same units, but just changing the position of them.  Sew fun!!!

I used a Sherri and Chelsi's  Creekside Layer Cake with a few pieces added in from Desert Bloom for a little more scrappy goodness.   And I just love that you can have the scrappy within each blocks colored layout, it really makes the blocks just pop!!!

If you have never used a Cake Mix before, they are papers that you lay on top of your 10" square set and then simply sew on the dotted lines and then cut on the solid lines.  You get all the pieces you need to make your Cake Mix Quilt and because you sewed on the lines you get perfect units every time with no trimming needed ;)

And as you can see from this quilt, the design possibilities are endless!!!  I had so much fun mixing around my HST's and 2 Patches to come up with something super bold and geometric that has so much wonderful movement and secondary designs that pop out non stop ;)  Eeekk, I just love it!!

When it came time to quilt it, I decided on an all over echoed paisley design (Video Free Motion Quilting Tutorial Here ) as I really wanted to the piecing to stand out.   It blends into the background just perfectly creating lots of beautiful texture without distracting from the piecing.  Just perfect for the purpose of this quilt ;)

And just in case you want to make up your own Turning Time quilt, I have included the Block Layouts that I used from Cake Mix Recipe 5  .  You will use all 45 sheets and need to grab a few 10" print squares from a second layer cake as they come with 42 ;)   Just look on the front of the Cake Mix and you will be using Block 4 Sets, just watch this diagram as the placement of the prints and solids change.   And you will have a few extra 2 patches that you can use to make a cute matching pillow to go with your quilt!!!

Turning Time finishes at 75" x 75" so it is just perfect to snuggle up in and enjoy a good book ;)  I had so much fun playing with the design of this quilt and making it up and hope you will have just as much fun making your own!!!

And that leads us onto Cake Mix Recipe 6 or as I have named it . . . Jack and Jill   Which is an absolutely adorably sized baby blanket, perfect for a special little wee one!!!   And mine is done "All Boy", but just change the greens out for pinks, and you can put a bow on it for "All Girl".  (Hence Jack and Jill ;)

I used Sweetwater's Authentic line for this quilt which really played up all 4 different blocks in the quilt.   The color placement was key to really make this design pop and Authentic was just perfect!!!

I just love tiny patchwork and having the Cake Mix to make that tiny patchwork perfect was so helpful for making this quilt up quick!!!  Each of those blocks finish at 6" square and with lots of happy points, perfect patchwork is super great and makes it so fun :)

When it came time to quilt it I had to laugh because I used my 402 Pearl thinking it would blend well into the whites and pop on the blacks, but nope, it just blended perfectly into everything.   Seriously, I could barely see where I was quilting half the time ;)  Not that you can see them, but there are all over swirls quilted in this, that makes for some wonderfully snugly good texture.

And just in case you want to make up your own Jack and Jill quilt for a special little one, I have again, included the Block Layouts that I used from Cake Mix Recipe 6.    You will use all 25 sheets as each finished sheet makes 2 blocks ;)   Just look on the front of the Cake Mix and you will be using Block 1, 2, 4, and 5 in the design, and refer below to how I used the colors tor really make the design pop.

Jack and Jill finishes at 42" x 42" , a perfect baby size quilt for playing on the floor or snuggling up tight in ;)  And again, I had so much fun playing with all of the fun blocks in this quilt and then watching them all come together into one adorable little quilt.   I hope you just love it and enjoy making your own "All Boy" or even "All Girl" version of Jack and Jill!!!

And those are my two quilts that I made for Spring Market, just sharing in time for Fall ;)   Yippee!!!  I hope you have enjoyed this post and if you make either Turning Time or Jack and Jill I would love to see it!!!  You can email me a picture at happyquiltingmelissa@gmail.com or add it to social media with #happyquiltingmc ;)    I can't wait to see your  Cake Mix Quilts!!!
Have a Happy Quilting Weekend!!!
